this season chelsea by a mile. we were lucky to get through in the end against a **** underperforming barcelona because the difference between us going through and going out was the couple of inches of post that kept out ronaldinho's shot. we didn't see anything last night that wasn't already on view throughout the whole season. and chelsea are far better defensively than anyone we have played in europe. our attack looks good against mediocre defences - eg barcelona - and very average/almost totally uninspired against good ones - eg chelsea.

That's the task facing us next week.
Please correct me if I am wrong but I didn't think we were playing in Europe in 91.
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

Tom not sure the title is accurate as we were 2-1 down to Crystal Palace in the league cup semis and won the return leg 5-0 :-)

Remember Depor vs Ac Milan a few years back? We can do it. We need our big boys to stand up and perform. The crowd will undoubtedly be an influence but in Europe in these kind of games we rely on an early goal and most of those games in 2005 we got them (Leverkusen, Juve, Chavs...) so hoping for more of the same

Some questions we should ask ourselves

Can we stop them scoring? Like, er, Newcastle did last week

Heae we ever beaten them 1-0 in a CL Semi-Final? I seem to recall we did.

Have we beaten them 2-0 at Anfield in the recent past? Injuries or no, I believe the answer is yes.

Worst case, do they ever concede 3 goals in a game? Only aainst the 'mighty' Spurs barely a month ago (WITH Terry, Cech and Carvalho playing).

Finally, Have we ever scored 3 goals to win a European match in extremis? APART from Inter, Bruges, St Etienne, the Mark Walters one, Alaves, Olympiakos and Milan, of course.

Believe, folks, that's our job. Let's not get all wussy because a CL Semi-Final isn't panning out as a cosy, relaxed stroll in the park.

I think we've only got around a 30% chance of going through.

I know a lot of people think it's in the balance, a Chav fan I spoke to on the tube on the way home who was at the game (you could tell because he was carrying one of them crappy flags they gave out free ) said as much. He was saying he felt it was a missed opportunity that they didnt get more when they had the chance.

I can see that point of view. But the tuth is that going away from home holding a victory and no away goals conceded is practically a perfect 1st leg result if you're as strong as Chelsea are.

What was most impressive about them is how hard working, determined and committed they were. They were closing us down when we got possession as if they were the away side. No titredness at all.

The odds are stacked against us now, no doubt about it. I think this is the biggest role the 12th man could ever play.

A poor performance by us at Stamford Bridge resulted in only 1 goal. Chelsea are tired and will be even more so nect tuesady, plus we'll be at home.
In the 2nd half we outplayed them as they were tired. All hope is not lost and I believe that a decent peformance at home will see us through.

Questions, will finnan be back and will Rafa start with Zenden and Bellamy. If we start with crouch and Pennant, plus hopefully Finnan then we are definately at the races.

I don't care waht Tery or the other Chavs say, they'll definately be intimidated by the Crowd at Anfiled, plus the'll be facing a better team than last time. A 2 - 1 win is what I'm putting my mnoey on.
No matter how far back you seem, when you're blessed with class, anything is possible. Chris Bascombe Sep 21 2006

I certainly hope you're reffering to an aggregate score and not the result on the night

Yes aggregate by virtue of our two goals at Anfield.

Sorry should have made that clear.

Im not feeling confident, I'll be honest, but **** me, if ever that team of ours needs motivation all they need to think about is that if they dont get their arses into gear then that shower of ***** will be strutting around Anfield as happy as they have ever been while we will look like *****.

And as befits our traditions (and self-image), we would have to applaud their acheivement even as they strutted......

Yep, I was talking to a work colleague of mine today, a fellow red, who basically said exactly the same thing - imagine how sickening it would be to watch them parading around Anfield celebrating getting through to CL final.
