Spot on. And when that day does come, we keep Riise as the second choice.

Perhaps because he signed one in 2006 and it will expire in July 2009 is a more likely explanation

We'd sell Riise for £5M, easy.

Taylor scores just as many goals, defends better, and is better on the ball. I think he'd slot in really nicely.

A better left back, for zero net spend? Sounds like a great idea to me.

Basically a player can buy out the remaining years of his contract after a period of two years have passed since signing a new contract

That's not such a bad thing as it seems. Ex a player earns 50k/week. To buy out his contract (2yrs Remaining) will cost him 5.2 million. If the club sells him for 5 million they will still have to pay out the remainder of his contract (difference in wages), unless player requested a transfer. So in most cases the club will save on wages. The only real result of this will be that players will be valued at the value of their outstanding contract (wages) in most cases

well exactly, and i'd say riise is worth more than 5mil

He only has two years left on his contract. If you look at how Rafa works with contracts then he almost never let a player stay if he has less than two years left on his contract.

Kewell was injured so we could not sell him.

Hyypia, Fowler and Zenden will leave or have left when their contract runs out.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Anybody know what wages he's on?

Personally I think Riise biggest asset is his durability. It's a rarity to have a left sided player that's not injury prone.

I would not sell him. Yes he makes mistakes but he also has the ability to change a game. I'd rather have a proven player than one that might be as good

                        Look at these stats

Riise: League Time played: 2581 min Goals conceeded: 17
Taylor: League Time played: 2686 min Goals conceeded: 34

Mate, honestly, do you think those out of context stats prove much in either direction?

People on here are saying that Riise is a liability in defence. FACT is that in more than 28 League game with him on the field (Not always at LB) we conceeded 17 goals.

How much of a Liability is he really?

Where do opposition teams aim to attack us, mate?
Where did Milan get the crosses in from?

I am not saying he is terrible, but he is the defensive weak link and to improve the defense he is the one we could replace with a better player.
