Well, if ever his commitments outside work entails on his job, it's perfectly normal his employer should have a regard on that.

It's an issue where people have been sitting on a fence too many times, IMO. Religion is a personal issue, and should be treated as such.

Still, it's a weak comparison mate.
Mr arse you would, especially if that boss knows you're a huge Liverpool fan and can't miss that game.

It's not a weak comparison at all, but it is a simplistic one, yes.

No it's not because other people don't see it as fair and the only way to be fair is to ignore outside individual choices and treat everyone the same. Trust me mate I deal with over a 100 staff in 3 different business's and you can't treat people differently because the other person is always looking at what you're doing and what that person is getting.
I'll give you a real simplistic(no refelction on you) argument based around that mate.
If someone smokes and requires a fag break and someone who doesn't smoke and doesn't get any special break is that fair. Well that's how people look at things so one of 2 things happens either everyone gets a sepcial break or no one does.
BTW enjoying the debate putting up some good points.

I sincerely would mate, albeit a little bit disgruntled but that's part and parcel of accepting the job in the first place. It's paying my wages and allowing me to do the things I want in life, so why letting something which is personal to me having an influence on another thing where there are other people involved, with no particular interest whatsoever to LFC ?

Nice. Have you considered that Benayoun is a representative of his country and people, and preferring his club over his religion could hurt his reputation and offend his friends?

Yes, but he should be man enough to tell them to accept what he thinks is right for him, not for Jewish people.

You are not in his position so you can't judge him, we don't know much about the situation.

No more can be said really.

It's a non ending discussion and one where no one will ever be able to reach a common ground.

I'm a good yiddisha boy, and we in Australia have now completed the fast.

Yom Kippur is by far and away the most important Jewish holiday. It is a complete fast, no water nor food for almost 26 hours.

The most secular of Jews will observe this holiday and attand prayer.
i was in Synagaogue for about 8 hours today, and even though i am as passionate a liverpool supporter as there is, if I were a player i would not play today.

I think Yossi is dead right not to play.

If you work in a particular environment that prevents you from doing certain things then tough **** you have to live with it that's your choice to be there.
It's not the clubs fault, if they didn't sign him because he was Jewish there would be up roar and rightly so.
Religion should not determine your ability to work or not work.
i agree with this, but in certain circumstances exceptions need to be made.

I guess you have no idea how important this day is to us, if you don't know much about the religion.

                          This is Bollox.
I would not care (and i doubt Yossi does) about what the nation or friends said. This is something you do for yourself, your own repentance. I would care less if my friends, family did not observe the holiday - it is their choice, but almost every Jew world wide, religious, or totally irreligious would observe Yom Kippur.

PS - you are permitted not to fast if you are ill, aged, pregnant, just given birth or very young or if there is any other life threatening condition you have. Such people will however still attend Synagogue, repent and prey.

No one ever said he did not want to play - i am sure he'd love to, but has had to make a moral decision
