This is the part I really don't get.

Why and what did Rafa sign him to do for us?

He seems not to want to use him as an out and out forward, even with Torres out injured and with Crouch seemingly in the doghouse.

So was he bought as a creative player (trying hard, very hard not to laugh)?

I just don't see what role he fulfills in the team. I really don't.

      Unsubstantiated bashing?

I consider my criticism of Kuyt to be constructive.

I see him fail to execute the basic premises of the game and I wonder why he constantly gets picked, and why some seem to refuse to accept his poor performances and constructive criticism towards him?

Has he somehow become a sympathetic figure because of his attitude, work ethic and the fact that he's a top bloke?

Tell you what mate I'd rather have a horrible wife beating **** like George Best in the team. Every time.

the real problem i'm having at the moment is if you stuck a fit torres out on the right today i dare say he wouldn't have performed to his usual standards. rafa's not playing Kuyt in his proper position, the same position he banged in 40 odd goals in one season over in holland. okay now granted not the best league in the world, but it seems to me Kuyt is getting further and further away from the goal as time goes on, and playing him in all manner of stupid ****ing positions is ridiculous. But thats Rafa for ya

look the way I see it at least he tries and until we get someone better we;'re stuck with him. Granted, he is lacking in some areas, it doesnt help being played out of position.

He's played out wide for Feynoord, Holland and us in the past, so I don't accept "out of position" as an excuse. It's not his best position, but he should be able to perform better than that.

It's all irrelevant anyways as if it was just this performance in isolation we were talking about, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. As things stand however, he's been rather poor for a while and needs to be dropped.

We badly need another top class striker and in all honesty, I wouldn't be overly sad to see any one of Crouch, Kuyt and Voronin leave.

Let's face it, a lot of people are all set to say Kuyt had a rubbish game before kick off has even arrived. When people get into that mindset they see the slightest of his mistakes as more of the usual rubbish, and every good bit of work as a rare exception of him doing what any half decent player should be doing as the bare minimum.

Kuyt was far from superb today, but I thought he did alright given his role. Stopped Clichy giving as much as usual going forward, took a lot of ball with his back to goal and isolated but still kept moves going, won us set-pieces when he had to chase long balls into the corner, even managed to beat Toure who was forced to take a booking. Yeah, it's hardly creative stuff, but then I think before people criticise that quite so heavily I think they need to consider the kind of player he is. Kuyt is not ****e, but we're not getting nearly enough out of him.

He had a couple of months when he first joined where we saw exactly what he could offer. Aggressive, direct, great at keeping hold of the ball when tightly marked, smart choice of pass, and prepared to shoot on sight. He was scoring a goal every other game and coming up with regular assists too. He posed a threat every game. Since then he has clearly been instructed to play deeper, to be less forward thinking, take fewer risks with the ball.

Add to that we have an imbalance in our team with too many of these foil type players who look to play others in, and too few who look to beat people / get in behind onto through balls etc. As a result, what the **** can Kuyt do? Beat three men on his own and stick it in the net? Just because we haven't bought Ronaldinho doesn't mean we've got a useless sack of ****. Played too deep and without runners around him, he is a blunt implement because he is not a ball carrier or sublime technical player. Played higher up with players moving around him he can turn and either shoot, or pick a smart pass, in which case he can then make decoy runs / look for pull backs etc.

I've said for ages he strikes me as a really good third choice for a team that wants to win the league, and I don't think that's an unfair assesment. To win the league ideally your second striker should be creative as an individual as well as part of the team. But his recent bluntness in attack is to me more a symptom of the way he is used within a flawed team dynamic than a cause of it.

he simply is not good enough to hold down a role in premiership winning team.

anyone who rates Kuyt as more than an average (at best)player is deluded or very overly biast. If he played for UTD, we'd be laughing at him.
