Net spend is the correct way to work it out however.......
If you recoup say 80 million over 6 years then it is a very valid arguement because it shows over a sustained period of time you have had to sell to buy.
If you happen to recoup comparitive peanuts over 5 years then in 1 season have a massive one off once in a lifetime transfer fee of £80 million then it provides a false economy because in the previous 5 seasons you haven't had to sell to balance the books or sell in order to try and improve the playing squadThe King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

In an ideal world, Craigs ideal scenario would have come true. But I think the point of Merlboo's post was that there were plenty of people who were very skeptical that would happen and in hindsight those people have been proved right - unfortunately for us all.
At the very least, Rafa should not have been sacked before a suitable replacment had been lined up (behind the scenes obviously).
We took a huge gamble that a top class manager would want to inherit the **** that Rafa's had to deal with. Mourinho was never a possibility. Hiddink turned us down. Deschamps turned us down. We hear now that Pellegrini didn't apply. One big ****ing mess.K ris90210

In fairness, I don't think anyone said sack him at all costs regardless of the consequences. Everyone was at least specific that they wanted a good replacement.Originally posted by little dave hedgehog View Postso, craig, are you saying that only stupid people believed that when we sacked rafa, we would be getting in a top replacement, because we would also have new owners? is that what you're saying? because if so, i agree.

Under Roy I think the opinion is changing in that people would be prepared to take gambles they wouldn't have under Rafa.Forwards.......

The ting is der Dave, for some people on here the new owner caveat only came after the sacking. The Captain Hindsight argument is to convenient and it means people, who should be punished harshly for flipflopping, can say 'I know I spent the last yeah bellowing 'Sack Rafa' in capital letters and with exclaimation marks galore, but what I meant is only sack him if we've got new owners (or aren't going to appoint a 63 year old cretin). Even though I only started stating this part of my argument AFTER he was sacked surely everyone knew what I meant'.Originally posted by little dave hedgehog View Postso, craig, are you saying that only stupid people believed that when we sacked rafa, we would be getting in a top replacement, because we would also have new owners? is that what you're saying? because if so, i agree.

Some people obviously find it easier to love Rafa when he's not here.A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

i didn't mean the fans held us particularly back but our dwelling on the past as a cub does. which in my eyes was epitmised by the pairing of moores and parry who were conservative to the bone in that respect.Originally posted by dww View PostI'm far from convinced about this fans holding us back by their reverence for the past argument.
The only thing where I think the past has really held us back was when we didn't revolutionise the academy earlier as Heighway was in charge. Not sure how much influence the fans had in that. There have been many problems including poor commercial and financial management and limited plans from managers and poor buys that have held us back but cant really see how 'dwelling on the past has had a big impact'.
I do agree that the present/future is where we need to be looking as a club but we have to learn lessons. We need a manager who is less limited than Roy. At the minute sadly Roy is both the present and the immediate future. His actions will also have a bearing on the more medium to long term future. At this stage I just want him out and someone who understands the aims of the club to be in place.
I think we should look at the differences between our former and current managers to inform some of the decisions we have to take. We need a manager who prepares for success and is willing to buy into a long term vision and who has the ability and willingness to adopt tactics that are appropriate for the players, the league and the variations adopted by others.
don't get me wrong the past is hugely important. being proud of your achievements while at the same time admitting to your wrongdoings and accepting responsibility for it and drawing the right conclusions from it is hugely important in order to move forward.
for us, it's like we can't let go. which is understandable since the past is glorious whereas the present isn't.
i have no time rafa, he's gone. i have no time for roy either because his football pisses me all the way off. i just really hope he's being replaced by someone forward thinking and modern. as all of us do i reckon. all that rafa discussions ... like i said, utterly pointless.

i remember the argument i and others gave being we need to make sure that we have someone good enough to replace him and the answer was that anyone could do better.

Why was it 'stupid' to believe that we were on the brink of new owners? As it turns out, the prediction was out by about 3 months. Hardly 'stupid', just 3 months out.Originally posted by little dave hedgehog View Postso, craig, are you saying that only stupid people believed that when we sacked rafa, we would be getting in a top replacement, because we would also have new owners? is that what you're saying? because if so, i agree.
