Wenger offered him a new contract, Middlesbrough doubled his salary. It was Merson's choice to leave so I'm not sure where you get that out of.

99 goals in 400 games is not bad either. He was a decent player but that said he's a total cock who hates LFC with a passion so I've no problem with Glen laying into him.

Yeah thats from Wikipedia, but I remember hearing around the time that he was being moved on for his own sake, because of all the problems. It may have been his own decision, but the offer was there for him to be a squad player rather than the central figure, which he thought he was. I might be wrong, but thats what I remember from the time...
