Bit disappointed at the last minute Meireles move, but we do have a bunch of talented youngsters coming up. They may not be able to be as effective as Meireles in the current season. However in the long term it will pay off.

Overall extremely happy with the transfer window. Out squad is brimming with talented, young players who want to play for the club. Over the summer couple of times I may have criticized the targeting of British based players over reasonably priced foreign ones, Downing over Mata for example, but now it is obvious that the squad was built and purchases was made based on a systematic process. The capture of Coates also showed that our scouts are looking at value all over the globe.

The biggest positive for me is the relationship between the owners and the football management. Kenny has been lavishing praises on the owners this summer. He did not need to do that.

Today morning Commoli pointed out how the owners trusted the decision to sign players first and then try to move the deadwood later. It is a simple thing but it represents a significant huge shift from the way we conducted our transfers from the last 10 years. We did not wait till the last minute hoping that other clubs would increase their bids for our deadwoods and then conduct our purchases. It enabled us to address our weakness in squad much early on and in a calm manner. Kudos to the owners for taking that risk.

I was very happy with everything till I learnt the Chavs were tying up the deal for Raul with about 30 mins to go.
Now I agree Raul is not at all great on defence, but his ability to create and score goals - especially with his late untracked runs into the 18yrd box - is needed in a tight match.

I would have no prob with him going for two reasons.
                    1) We get an out and out winger in immediately
                    2) We sell him to another team, but not a rival for top 4 in any way.

Sadly, we have yet again been rumbled over by the chavs, and it's worrying that there is the possibility our players are being tapped up by the chavs. They've started a habit of buying our players, and they're in direct competition with us and they know we are a danger to them in the prem. I rem reading an article at the end of the 2010 season when Broughton had apparently told Charlotte Jackson at an eve do that the Chavs would go in for Torres in Jan 2011. Well it was rubbished by everyone (and her) but it did happen.

I was delighted Spurs stood their ground with Modric as i think he would have taken the Chavs play to another level. As it is they have got another creative mid in Raul. It's gonna give them the edge creatively with Mata & Ramires there now. I would have been really happy if we'd refused to sell him as we had no replacement to come in. We've given AVB a player he knows really well, so no doubt he'll be in the starting XI sooner rather than later.

I was really hoping we'd get in another winger, but we didn't and as it stands, if we lose Downing before Jan for any length of time, we're ****ed on the wings as his pace is valuable. Henderson is not a natural winger, his best position is the Gerrard attacking role in the middle of the park, as shown playing for Sunderland last season and at times against Bolton. Henderson is better than Cleverly in my book.

I thought we'd be buying two wingers at least, and we've only got one now. Maybe one of the ressies will get promoted but we really should have bought a right wing. The balance is perfect in the team except on the wings, and this really should have got sorted if Raul was going.

This whole last minute chav deal has left a sour taste in the mouth for me, as I don't believe it's what Man U or Man C would have done. We prob would have got A Johnson in, if that was the case. Don't forget Arse certainly plugged a few holes with their 4 signings yday, so we can't rule them out of top 4 for now.

Come to think of it, maybe we'll start to deploy Glen on right wing now?...
                    This.

I was working out what to post, because it's this Meireles move that has soured things somewhat for me. But this excellent post pretty much says everything I wanted to say.

I would have been far happier about losing him had he not gone to one of our main rivals for the top four slots. We should not be strengthening United (a given), City, Chelsea, Arsenal or (just in case) Tottenham by gifting them players like Meireles.

Of course, we don't know what has happened behind the scenes, but I think Liverpool have missed a trick here. Surely we must have known that Meireles was disaffected and perhaps we should have made more of an effort to offload him to a non-EPL club.

So basically, yesterday we swapped Ngog and Meireles for Bellamy and £16m in the bank. That looks like good business to me.
                      Oh I don't know.

I said elsewhere selling aqualiani and meireles should be considered if we got another winger in. That was ideally and you never get that. losing Downing is a concern. Bellamy can do a job on the wings if needed. I think we can move the shape to 3 at the back with Enrique and Johnson as wing backs if it comes to it. Playing 4 at the back and this in front of it would also work.

                        Gerrard ----- Lucas ------ Adam

                        Suarez ------ Carroll ----- Bellamy

RW and a striker to be addressed in the next windows and maybe an enforcer to CM.

look at our squad as a whole now:

Goalies: Reina, Doni - genuinely good backup........

Defenders: Carragher, Agger, Skrtel, Coates, Enrique, Kelly, Robinson, Flanagan, Glen Johnson - overall a solid defense with full back options on both sides that can properly support attacks.........also, we have Wisdom coming through as well.......

Midfielders: Gerrard, Lucas, Adam, Downing, Henderson, Maxi, Spearing, Shelvey......with the likes of Coady, Sterling etc coming through the ranks...... also both Kuyt and Bellamy can play on the wing as well if required........also, as mentioned in a top post above, Glen could also do a job on the right wing......and not a bad job either!!!

Forwards: Suarez, Carroll, Kuyt, Bellamy - feckin class.......

In reality, i think we are looking very good. The overall scope given to Commoli / Kenny of reducing the average age of the squad - and the wage bill has been achieved. Also, we have such a strong (and young) squad now that we will only be buying top top players in future - because we have got to the stage now where only top top players will make our team better - which is class.......

In the next 2 transfer windows, i can see us looking for maybe another centre back (depending on how skrtel and agger get on this season) as carra is getting on and also a winger. I think this is potentially where loaning Joe Cole to Lille could be a master-move - even if there is no first refusal deal for Eden Hazard in place (although i think there might be) then at least relations between the clubs will be good. To be honest, i think if Lille are knocked out of the CL by Jan, then I wouldn't be too surprised to see us make a move for him in Jan...... and also i wouldn't be too surprised to see Gary Cahill coming our way either in the event that we need to replace carragher......although that might be next summer......

Overall, i think we are doing really well......

Indeed, but TBH I think the cost of paying up contracts would need to be included to give a true financial picture of our activity this year.

I would guess that some of these sums might be quite high.

I think the idea was to bring in players that would hit the ground running, which is essential when you are over-hauling the squad. Next summer will be about bringing in quality players that can win us the league/CL.
