WTF are you talking about mate?Originally posted by kingfunk View PostIn australia, they openly call people of Asian decent "Wogs" even the news readers do. However if that happened here I'm sure it would be a racist slur. Horses for courses.... I think the FA have hot this one wrong.
this isn't true at all.

Nonsense. An ex-girlfriend from Hong Kong routinely referred to other Chinese people as chinks. She said it's just a descriptive term and Chinese people don't give a flying one about its use.Originally posted by rudedog View PostCalling a Chinese person a 'chinky' would be a racial slur but calling a restaurant/takeaway a chinky isn't.
Similarly my wife, who's Thai (I like to embrace diversity) calls Europeans "farangs" as all Thais do and often in an insulting way. Should I scold her for using racial slurs or accept that it's only patronising white liberals that get their knickers in a twist on such irrelevant matters?

And can anyone explain why the diminutive term **** is somehow an insult whereas the diminutive term brit isn't? Is it just those patronising white liberal scamps up to their old tricks again?Originally posted by ronanm View PostGetting off the oriental theme, is "Paddy" racist in your opinion?

I don't think "Brit" has ever been used by any racist groups as an offensive term during their "campaigns".
Like it or not, at some point the p word became synonymous with racist groups in this country. It therefore eventually became wrong for people to simply use it as a general term, and rightly so. Once a word has hate filled and racial connotations attributed to it then I don't know why anyone (other than hate filled racists) would want to use it anyway. Same with the N word.
Sorry if that makes me a patronising white liberal scamp

Although she was probally just saying that to seem more "western" to you. Try calling your wifes Brother or Father a chink at the next family due and I am guessing you will get a few free Mui Thai lessons. I can see it now, you and your wife walk into the family house in Phuket and you exclaim **** me were did all you Chinks come from ??
Incidentally Asian people are Incredibly racist, I would say much more so than any other ethnic groupLast edited by Nicey; 25-11-11, 08:52 AM.Anybody who criticizes Klopp ever is a James Blunt. Nov 2015

Ultimately it boils down to context and intent.
Calling someone is a chink is not ok
Saying I fancy a chinky is like saying a fancy a pizza, to me anyway.
Most racist terms have negative vibes attached to them, they are never terms of endearment, unless you get into that whole murky world of the N word, which I feel certain sections of the black community do themselves a disservice by using it the way the do.
Similarly if someone called me a Paddy in a business environment I would not be happy. For the most part Paddy has negative connotations.
By large most people I have come across who think people are being overly fussy about all this racial nonsense below the surface hold very clear views on people based solely on there race.
But hey ho .. it all seems to be getting betterAnybody who criticizes Klopp ever is a James Blunt. Nov 2015

Soz if I was misrepresenting the broader traits of your nation in the example above Fernandinhio. Just what I experienced there in the relatively small circles I moved in. Like I say, I found it funny rather than offensive. My mate & his family were good people & looked after me at what was a very difficult time in parts.3rd place. Worst champions ever.

'Brit' was anything but an affectionate term in places like the Falls Road a while back.Originally posted by Reece View PostI don't think "Brit" has ever been used by any racist groups as an offensive term during their "campaigns".

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

Surprised to hear you say that. Never been to Australia but I've worked in diagnostic imaging so met more than my fair share and when it's come up none have ever thought anything other than that it was an innocuous word that is an acronym of 'Western Oriental gentleman'. First time I heard it chucked about I was a bit taken abackOriginally posted by Fernandinho View PostWTF are you talking about mate?

I think this is crucial when discussing Evra. It's far too easy to jump to the convenient conclusion that Evra is at fault here but I find the accusation partial at best.Originally posted by twistnkuyt View PostIf people say they are going for a chinky then that is referring to the people that cook the food surely, and is derived from the name that has previously been used to describe Chinese people.
If I used the word Paddy, which I don't, then it would be simply because Patrick has always been considered a very common name in Ireland.
So if a French man says Rost Beef (sp) is that not racist because it is essentialy a food?
I do agree though that it's all about intent, though it is hard to say whether the intent meant is going to be the same os the perceived intent in the eyes of the recipient.
"Boy" is not necessarily an offensive term but it is when a white man says it to a black man in somewhere like Mississippi in an attempt to assert dominance. To pretend it's neutral here and that Suarez is being traduced by the evil Evra is badly judged..
