How far does racism go? It seems that it isn't purely about the colour of someone's skin or their religious beliefs. If I said I hated people from Newton-le-Willows (which I don't), would that be considered racist? If I called a Wiganner a pie-eater is that being racist? If someone Welsh was referred to as a sheep-shagger would that be racist? If a French person is called a Frog is that racist? Where is the line drawn? Does it have to be black people? Who are the victims of this "crime"? People make derogatory comments about Liverpudlians, the Irish, gypsies, Polish immigrants, black people etc. Surely genuine racism is about genuine hatred, I think that ignorance is being misconstrued. I guess only people who have been victims of racist behaviour would truly understand racism, but I feel fairly certain that Evra doesn't understand or relate to the genuine hatred behind racism based upon this pathetic situation. I really hope this tedious little ****er gets his comeuppance for stirring all this **** up.

Eh? So in your book it's ok to use a derogatory word if it's not directed at a person and it would be ok to say things like a P*** shop or a N***** house?

Me too If i genuinely thought Suarez was being racist I would not support him regardless of who he plays for, he was winding him up about his size, it was obvious

Tricky one like I said myself and my wife use it all the time, although its a kind of tongue and cheek joke between each other we would never use it in public. Same way she jokes from time to time A Gweilow Woman would not be able to cook that dinner, which is a racial slur on white people. Most expats in China wear there Gweilow tag like its a members card in some VIP club. But at its core its a racial slur.

I use the word Honkys from time to time, but any time I use any of these words its always with humor and its always directed towards myself or in my wifes case ourselfs, it becomes extremely different when somebody else uses them towards you. I can honestly say I don't think I have ever in my life directed a racial slur at someone to there face or behind my back, its just not in my DNA, but I can it might take time for others to wipe these words out of there vocabulary.

Chinky, ****, Paddy etc etc yep they are all racist and just becauuse they have been around for a longtie and perhaps seem harmeless to most people .. its quite different when you are on the receiving end of one.

Not that I am defending it, but usually when people say they fancy a Chinky it is referring to type of food which they find Delicious. Unlike if someone said get me a paper from the **** shop on the corner, it is referring to the race of the people who are in the shop / own it.

Its tricky, ideally I suppose they should all just go the way of the Dodo and eventually I think they will. But at the same time we need to be a little bit flexible and also realize that all of us live in glass houses.

I agree and in my youth it will bother me but these days nah, i don't really give a **** what you call me, i know who and what i am.

Just pointing out that it seems at least in the UK that using the P and N word is now taboo yet for some the C word is still ok to use. Why is that? Is it because the Chinese are a smaller minority?

Well your opinion is plain wrong because for all extent and purposed it is, its a racial slur used mainly by English people to describe Irish people, some Irish people might use the word but it still does not make it any less of a racial slur, If a English person in an office said, Hey Paddy, go to the photocopying machine and make me a dozen of these, the company would have a lawsuit on there hands.

Because mostly it refers to the food not the people. You dont hear people saying OHHHH you know what .. I really fancy a ****

Also just because something does not bother you now and fair play for that, it does not make it any less racist.

Just looking up racial slurs and seen Honky described as this

Honky also spelled "honkey" or "honkie"
                          (1) (U.S.) An offensive term for a white person. Derived from an African-American pronunciation of "hunky", the disparaging term for a Hungarian laborer. The first record of its use as an insulting term for a white person dates from the 1950s.[102]

Actually when I think of it I read somewhere that Honky is derived from White men going around poor black areas in there cars honky there horns looking to pick up black prostitutes.

Also read recently that the word Faggot, is derived from a piece of wood used in burnings, when killing homosexuals they would just throw them in with the Faggots becauase burning at the stake was too good for them

Probably good reasons to stop using both words not that I ever have used the word Faggot. Behind most racial words you will find a painful past no matter how innocent they seem now

In australia, they openly call people of Asian decent "Wogs" even the news readers do. However if that happened here I'm sure it would be a racist slur. Horses for courses.... I think the FA have hot this one wrong.

Yeah but Australia is changing in that regard, whats key for me in all of this is that One Negrita is a term of endearment and Two there is an element of Size attached to the phrase ... He most certainly was winding him up, but I dont think he was being intentionally racist regardless of what the English FA think. I for one will not be happy nor silent if the ruling goes against him.

If people say they are going for a chinky then that is referring to the people that cook the food surely, and is derived from the name that has previously been used to describe Chinese people.

If I used the word Paddy, which I don't, then it would be simply because Patrick has always been considered a very common name in Ireland.

So if a French man says Rost Beef (sp) is that not racist because it is essentialy a food?

I do agree though that it's all about intent, though it is hard to say whether the intent meant is going to be the same os the perceived intent in the eyes of the recipient.
