If Suarez had never mentioned using the word Negrito, I don't believe the FA would have brought this charge.

He should have gone to the hearing and not mentioned anything and then said to the FA, you prove to me that I'm racist. You prove to me that I said something offensive..

There is no way this would have gone on for as long as it has and I don't believe we would be in this situation now..

I have a feeling if the police press charges against terry, the FA will do FA about him saying its a police matter only.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

Agreed, his honesty has cost him.

but then again it was fergie's player and we all know he works by a different set of rules.

The only thing suarez admitted to was saying the word "negrito", that in itself does not constitute racism. Especially as that term is common and un-offensive in his native country. Absolutely no common sense! as usual! Just like the bull**** about appealing yellow/red cards and not being able to act on something not in an incompetent referee's report....

Nah, the club have already said the FA are choosing to take Evra's word over Luis', it'd have made no difference, the FA had decided what they'd do on the saturday Evra come forward.

              I've just read Taylor's and Ouseley's comments. It's cultural absolutism - pathetically one-eyed and lacking in self-awareness.

As is the verdict, if what I've read about the evidence is correct.
              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

there's no question he said what he said. the hearing hinged on whether or not those words were offensive. might've been easier if he hadn't come right out and told everyone he had called him something, but as it is there's still plenty of room for appeal. we might still lose it, but it's not over yet and i think suarez has a case. will be interesting to see whether they charge evra given that he also admitted to "abusive" words in the other direction in his testimony. they were no better and no worse than what suarez said.

                allegedly.
I have to admit my ingorance in the english language here, but when and why did negro become a racist term? I'm of course aware of the N-word, but I wasn't aware that negro carried that much weight, given it's so much used in other languages and literally means black. Is it ok to call a black man black or do you have to specify it like african-european or something like that?

The rules differ somewhat between seasons so I think they don't have to be consistent across seasons, only during a season.

"Cultural absolutism" - well put. How so many people can't see this is unreal.

I've just read the Tompkins article, I find it shocking that they don't consider any element of doubt in these cases, it seems incredibly knee-jerk reaction. A very black and white interpretation of the situation, after all that was mentioned about cultural differences and the nuances of language, all that seems to be ignored.

I think that all of us agree that there is no place for racism in football, but I feel than as much as the authorities and campaigns such as 'kick it out' and others have a duty to tackle racism I think that they also have a duty to ensure that such cases are handled correctly so that people aren't wrongly accused or punished, and in this respect I think that the situation has been handle abysmally. As a result Suarez is going to himself be subject to alot of vile abuse.
