Liverpool have taken former Barcelona youngster Juanma on trial.

The teenager, full name Juan Manuel Garcia, started at left-back for the Reds Under-21s against Welsh side Rhyl, report the Liverpool Echo.

And it was an impressive debut with the 19-year-old sending in a perfect cross for Brooks Lennon’s goal as the Reds ran out ready 4-1 winners.

Liverpool U21/U23s manager Michael Beale said after the game that the player was someone he was keen to have a look at.

Beale said: “Juanma is a boy who’s come in to spend the week with us with a view to maybe seeing more of him.

"He’s only had a couple of days training with us, speaks very little English but you can see a very good player. He had a fantastic assist for Brooks Lennon.

“He was at Barcelona so we’ll have a look and see how we go with him. He played with (fellow Academy players) Madger Gomes and Pedro Chirivella with Spain so we’re quite familiar with him.

“He’s very versatile and can play in different positions because technically he’s very good.

“I quite like him, he reminds he a little bit of someone like a Pablo Zabaleta-type player, a nice player.”

Juanma played as a centre back and a left back during his time at Barcelona where he progressed through from the cadet team to Barcelona’s Youth B team and to the A team where he made 17 appearances in the UEFA Youth League, including six as captain.

It is not the first time Liverpool have moved to take a player with experience of Barcelona’s La Masia academy.

In 2013, the Academy picked up Sergi Canos from the same place and after a couple of years at the Academy and an impressive loan spell at Brentford last season, he moved to Norwich earlier this month for a fee of £2.5m rising to £4.5m.

Another youngster in the Academy after leaving Barcelona is Bobby Adekanye, a flying 17-year-old winger whose first season was dogged by injury but who remains full of potential.

Speaking of Canos’ departure, Beale said: “A fantastic move for Sergi Canos and we wish him well going on with his career now with Norwich. Sergi’s a fantastic kid, had a good year last year at Brentford and it’s a good move for him.

"Norwich are a big club, one of the favourites for the Championship this year and it just shows that if the boys don’t progress through to our first team and do well we are now churning out players that will play at a high level.

“The Academy can’t just be taking all the time, can it? The investment in the players and staff is a big investment for any club.

"It’s important that over time if the work’s been good, you’ve got a manager that will trust the players and secondly that those players have got a value.

“That’s what we’re started to see more and more of now.

"There’s probably 10 or 12 players that people are really aware of and excited about that will either make their way into our first team under Jurgen (Klopp) or will have top careers.

“That’s what we want our Academy to be known for, we don’t want to be selling a dream for a boy when he comes in at nine and at 17 he’s off finding a day job for himself.”

Another new face in the Rhyl game was Nathan Phillips, a centre back who played in the second half alongside Llloyd Jones.

Beale said: “Nathan is another guy we’re looking at from outside as well. Our numbers are quite low at the moment with boys who came back yesterday with the youth team.

"We picked up one or two injuries in our game in midweek (on tour in Germany) with Madger Gomes, Jake Brimmer and Paolo Alves.

“So we’ve supplemented it with a couple of players we’d like to have a look at. They’re triallists at the minute but we’ll see.

"There’s a couple more games this week, we go to Celtic on Wednesday, Morecambe’s first team on Saturday and we play MK Dons on Monday.”

Possibly a shrewd move with Smith potentially heading to Bournemouth.

Good to see some obvious organisation and direction from the club these days. Shame Klopp wasn’t here 10 years ago when it was a bit more of a level playing field or even Rafa given a similar amount of control in his time, before handing the reigns to Klopp.

Which I like, you know what he is looking for and the general plan. He is clear that the academy is as much a factory for the wider game as it is a kindergarten for the senior squad.

How come we haven't entered this Academy comp then ?

10 Premier sides in EFL Trophy including Chelsea and West Ham.

Only half of the Premier League clubs have chosen to enter academy sides into this season's EFL Trophy, with both Manchester sides, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all opting out.

FA Youth Cup holders Chelsea and West Ham - the team they beat in last season's final - will compete.

Premier League champions Leicester are also participating along with Everton, Stoke, Southampton and West Ham.

West Brom, Stoke, Middlesbrough and Swansea are the other top-flight teams, while Brighton, Norwich, Blackburn, Wolves, Derby and Reading will take part.

The revamped competition will see the academy teams start in the new first round group phase, which has a total of 64 teams playing in 16 four-team sections.

They will be regionalised with one of the category one sides going into each pool with at least one club from each of League One and League Two.

Something about the requirement to use Anfield stadium and the scheduled games I believe

                New contract for Wilson, surprisingly.

Wonder if he'll get a run out against Mainz, now he's fit again.

Surprisingly? He's very highly rated at Melwood. Just the injuries getting in the way.

He's fell way behind Kent, Ojo, Ejaria, Branno and even Canos last season.

I've been rating him above all of those but not so sure now with all the injuries.
                    One tit for another.

He's was always the smallest of that year and the second youngest. He's only 19 and a bit.

                        Yes, 'surprisingly'.

He was the year above the likes of Kent and Ojo. There only may be a few months in actual age and he might have been young in his age group, but he’s in the group of players that turn 20 this year and for many this is make or break.

He was also arguably more impressive than the likes of Kent and Ojo when he broke though and looked destined to be the next big thing after Sterling and Ibe, but after making his Wales debut at such a young age and being on the fringes of the first team, he still hasn’t make the breakthrough 3 years later, whereas Ojo, Kent and even the younger players now seem to have moved ahead of him. Obviously it was an unfortunate injury he picked up and for a lot of fans it’s a case of out of sight, out of mind which is why he was largely forgotten about, but even before the injury he seemingly didn’t do much at Crewe.

He’s 19 now, still hasn’t made an appearance for the first team, the club have let a number of promising youngsters go this summer and he plays in the position we are by far the best stocked in at all levels, so yes I was surprised to read that he was offered a new contract.

That being said, I'm glad he has because when I still had the time to watch our youth teams play regularly a few years ago, he was more often than not, the star of the show.

I think its very sensible to give him a new deal, a) injuries have set him back. b) he obviously has talent. c) a loan move could be on the cards. d) we've seen how much we can sell players for if it doesn't work out.

If the lad puts his injuries behind him, has a decent enough loan move we'll easily get £2-3m for him in a year if we don't think he's up to scratch. Or he recovers, kicks on and joins the first team.

The Wales debut was simply a way to make sure he stayed Welsh, he was never going to push on at national level. As for Crewe well that loan was possibly the one that the club had in mind when they came up with the 75% rule! CA were in dire straits and they were never going to look to a 18 year old loanee to stop them going down.

Yes, there may be mitigating circumstances for a lot of the reasons why he hasn’t kicked on, but the reality is that he still hasn’t and for a lot of footballers that would mean being shown the door.

Also, when he made his Wales debut at 16, I don't think many expected him to cement a first team place right away, but by this stage I think most would have hoped he'd have at least been in the squad making up the numbers.

That was my first thought I must admit. Give him another chance to prove himself and if not, sell him for a few million.
