The next thing the ref would say would be:

"OK, on review I am seeing that the Red 3 actually got a toe to the ball, so I am not seeing a free kick, do you agree".

"Yes we agree".

The other way if say, VAR thinks it may be a pen, VAR would intervene and say. "You might want to have a look at this as it as foul may have been inside the box"

again reviewed, it would be clear that it was outside the box, and not a free kick.

"OK, on review, the red 3 got a toe on the ball, so the decision is no penalty, no free-kick".

The transparency removes any 'arse-covering' also hearing and seeing the decision discussed in real time means you take the spectators with you (even if they disagree).

The on field decision remains until there is clear evidence that a mistake has been made. There is no issue with anything being missed as the VAR is so much a part of the overall package. VAR is not currently part of the process, it is an outsourced anonymous review, which is why it doesnt work.

Its just never ever a part of the post match discussion. OK, there are more occasions to score in Rugby which is a difference, but the process of arriving at the correct decision is the same.

Its baffling that they cannot get it right, there is just such a massive element of incompetence, because they are nowhere near arriving at the correct decision.

Plus, why not look at it as a 'process'? However it is not implemented as a process, and it feels like the criteria for making the decision changes pretty much every game.

Football's version of it is just so massively cack handed. Pretty every other sport has done it better. The ones you listed, plus NFL and more.

Watching again on MOTD, Sheffield Utd played really well in the first half.

We ground out the second half and got it over the line.

Well yes. Henderson in goal for one and O'connell in defence is a massive loss. That's two of their best players from last year. But ultimately they won a lot of tight games last season, some they were lucky to win, so far it hasn't happened for them this season. They're in trouble as I thought they would be. Wrong team for Brewster imo, the style just isn't him.

They massively struggle to score goals from open play. Well organised unit that have been over performing with the players they have imo.
