Baitman is to Trent as Bootroom is to Henderson

Personally, I thought there was evidence of this at the start of that season, but that could well have been confirmation bias on my behalf, based on the articles I read. Personally, I'm writing of last season as an aberration, just like the Covid season and not draw too many conclusions from it. Obviously that works both ways, so can't say we should be title contenders based on title winning form over the last 10 games (although I believe we will be ).

There was an article last year I've been trying to find, analyzing Trent's defensive capabilities, basically illustrating how his weaknesses are exposed in the FB position, but playing further up suits him better, I think primarily because his recovery stats are excellent, rather than being faced one-on-one with attackers. Can't find it though.

IN terms of playing him as DM as someone raised, I don't think we're considering that as an option. I think out of necessity he has played there pre-season, but also to help him improve his midfield awareness for his new role.

If we can get 1 or 2 more bodies in for midfield and hit teh ground running against Chelsea, I strongly believe we'll challenge City for the title. If we do as well as I hope, I predict that Trent will be in the running for POTY.

TBF to what I said, I was not knocking TAA rather was just acknowledging that he was poor past season and that a decent final quarter does not paper over the really poor 3/4s of the season he had.

I would, if I were the manager, be putting him back into the position where he excelled once we had gotten the midfield back up to full strength and be drilling it into him the importance of his defensive duties when we lose the ball or when we have committed more players forward on the other flank etc.

I really rate TAA but think when you have one of the best, if not best when on form, attacking full backs in the game in your team, then you play him as an attacking full back rather than put him into a position that he can play in but maybe not to the high levels he can achieve when at RB and also him in the new position does mean other players having to cover more than they would have to had he been at RB. IMO of course for all that as that Klopp fella might play more Fifa than I do and as such know a teeny weeny bit more than I.

As for POTY next season, sorry TAA will not be in the running as Tchouameni will be the guy in the mix for that for us after leading us to the league title

          I didn't think you were.

As per comments on Trent at his traditional RB role, that has been my stance for a long time, even when he was in shocking form. He didn't just become a poor FB overnight or stop caring/trying, despite how it looked. However, considering the immediate results after the switch, Klopp's comments on how he had considered this move for a while and the fact we bought players that suit this new formation, I just can't see us changing back any time soon. I did wonder a few weeks ago if we'd maybe alternate, depending on opposition and personnel available, but now think barring any disastrous runs of form or serous injuries to key players for this formation, this will be how we set up for the majority of games.

Difficult to discount or disagree with that, though I would add the caveat of how the upturn in form also coincided with the addition of Jones in suberb press resistant form in the centre of midfield and the amount of turnovers against us in the centre, especially the left side of centre, plummeting from the very first game Jones started in that final run in.

Less turn overs in the middle meant a bit more time on the ball every game for TAA.

I suppose an arguement could then be made using what I said, and how the addition of two guys like MacAllister and Szoboszlai (two guys good against a press and two guys who cause a low number of turnovers against their own team) would further increase the time a deep lying TAA would have on the ball.

I dont even think he would make a decent DM. I remember Gerrad in there, and he was not great. Hendo was poor in there to. You need someone with the right instincts who is prepared to sacrifice getting forward to do the job of sitting there. Its a waste of TAAs talents, and goes against his instincts.
We’ve only been playing him there in the friendlies because the other options are unavailable or haven’t been signed yet.

He’ll be playing next to a DM once that’s been resolved, like the run in last season.

I'm flattered by your levels of diligence, you honour me with your c/p skills

Maybe you could gather it up and add to the trent thread.

                  Thanks again, Mr Alexander-Arnold

Does he want to though. I have the feeling he.now regards himself as a midfielder.

I’m not sure what Trent wants positionally but was referring more to his perceived appetite for doing the defending and his focus within games.

Typically yes, it is a very disciplined role but it does not necessarily always have to be because football is a very dynamic game and its tactics continually evolve. Coaches like guardiola and klopp are continually tinkering with the norm.

It’s not a problem for a DM to make a run forward provided they do so at the right time and they are in a system where someone will cover them.

The players could be coached to do that if klopp wanted to.

Well an injury probably kills the rumour that he was going to be loaned to Southampton as part of the Lavia deal.
