Is he a 10 though?
Isn't he just part of a 3 man midfield that destructs and creates a lot like Gini, Henderson and Fabinho. None of them were 10s and none scored many goals. The forwards did like they do now.
I think he's great and huge part of why we're top of the league and unbeaten in CL.

He's an attacking midfielder, playing behind the front three. Whether that makes him a 10 or not I'm not sure. I'm crap at tactics.
Either way he should be more prolific. There were times yesterday where I think Harvey would have got a shot off and instead Dom hesitated. I think it could just be a confidence thing, but it has been going on a long time.
I think Palmer would eat up the goals for us for example (not a realistic signing I know).

That’s fair. I think Szob can cover more ground quicker and is more effective with the dirty work but that’s no slight on Elliott and there probably isn’t much in it. When we have most of the possession anyway we can probably afford to trade off what each brings to the team and play Elliott more.Originally posted by BigChief View PostBoth are super fit regardless. No harm in trying Elliot more. Szob started his career as a shot specialist and now can't hit the target.
Don’t really disagree and he is definitely a contributor as to why we’re top, but like Pablo first mentioned, his numbers should be better.Originally posted by BG1973 View PostIs he a 10 though?

He’s definitely playing as a 10 this season whereas he was part of a midfield three like the one you describe last year.

He might but then we might also lose the hard running and covering done by that position that leads to the ball being won ( or not lost ) that in turn leads to the ball getting back into the other team's final third.
Palmer's defensive numbers and tracking back numbers are dwarfed by those of Szobo along with Szobo being a far better recycler of the ball than Palmer.
So stands to reason that Palmer would score more than Szobo in our team, but he might not score as much as he does with Chelsea as we would be defensively weaker with Palmer in place of Szobo.
Think if we wanted to have a Palmer type attacking midfielder in our team then we would need a more defensively pro active (during transitions of play against us) right flank, certainly a more traditional and more mobile right back.
Palmer would, imo of course, almost need the same level of cover and freedom that we have set our team up to give Salah.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Yep, all good points. I think there is a middle ground there somewhere. I still think it's a possible area of improvement for us. That might just be working on Szobo's confidence and his shooting/finishing, rather than bringing someone else in. We certainly have other areas of the team I'd prioritise improving.Originally posted by Doc_Piptorious View PostHe might but then we might also lose the hard running and covering done by that position that leads to the ball being won ( or not lost ) that in turn leads to the ball getting back into the other team's final third.

lol... never clear what numbers mean. He is playing AMC. Macca and Grav are playing DMC/MC depending om how you view it.
Id say AMC is where Ellioit would best sit. Against teams sitting deep, you dont need to agressive press Dom brings. And Elliott pressing stats were still pretty good under Klopp. Doesnt have the same physique, but still works hard.In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

I agree with this, think Elliott can unlock deep lying defences in a way that few of our other players can.Originally posted by Charly View Postlol... never clear what numbers mean. He is playing AMC. Macca and Grav are playing DMC/MC depending om how you view it.

Szob covers our right hand side with Trent pretty well usually, and I imagine that's why he's so popular with Slot. If Bradley was there instead, that might be less important

8 or 10 he still plays much further forward (or certainly starts further forward) than Mac Allister and Gravenberch.Originally posted by rudedog View PostHe’s not a 10, he’s an 8 same as Alexis
Neither are much of a goal threat but not scoring goals hasn’t been our issue of late. If we are looking for areas to improve then not conceding from 50% of the shots we face would be the place to start.
Not sticking the boot in (and I didn’t read Pablo’s post in that way either), but I don’t think we’re being greedy by wanting better numbers. There were a couple of games in December - United being one - where we had great chances to score and his shooting and decision making were well off.
Happens to all players so we’re not digging him out but he could / should be touching double digits on both goals and assists. Gakpo, Diaz and Jota when fit chip in but we’re still too reliant on Mo so another forward amongst the goals would be handy.
I do also fully agree about your point about conceding fewer goals.Last edited by Lee; 16-01-25, 12:43 PM.
