I think the year Ged got ill we were 1st and then had pretty bad run in Dec? Don’t think it was as bad as Man City’s current collapse though

Edit - just checked and we had a 4 point lead before going on a run of not winning in 13 league games

Ended up out of the top 4 that season
The season Ged got ill, we finished 2nd.

The following season we finished 5th.

Did Arsenal scrape a 1-0 win against lowly Ipswich or was there a different story? Is this about Saka being out?

        Get the contracts done.
Sign a Defensive Midfielder and a Left Back in the window. Press home the advantage.
I can understand the difficulty considering the lack of spending this past summer.

The lack of links of Virg & Mo joining X or Y on a free leads me to believe their agents have said they are not for sale. Trent on the other hand is a different fish

Ipswich look to be tightening up, Chelsea will have a game on there. Brentford are decent at home, Arsenal without Saka means that should be an interesting prospect too.

Either way, we just need to keep our show on the road

When it comes to spending, who knows with these owners. Winning the EPL is hard, the owners support is needed to close the deal. Both with eliminating distractions and making sure enough resources (players) are in place for the second half of the season.

We've got 4 league games in January

United at home and away at Forest,.Brentford and Ipswich

We also play 4 cup games. 1st leg of the League Cup Semi, Home to Accrington in the FA Cup
Away to Lille and home to PSV in the Champions League

You'd like to think there is plenty of scope for squad rotation in these.games

                  Full strength.in the.4 league games.
Full strength Vs Spurs in the first leg and try and kill the tie
Mixture of fringe first teamers and kids Vs Accrington, PSV and Lille

If we.could go into Feb with a relatively fresh squad after 8 games in Jan it'd be huge

Yep and if we add a body or two in the transfer window it would go towards being able to rest players during that run also.

By contrast, Chelsea have 5 games, 4 of which are league games. Their advantage hasn't shown yet but may start to soon

Agreed. And summarising it further I would say we only have 6 games in January as Accrington and PSV are dead rubbers.

So Chelsea have 5 games in total, 4 of them PL. We have 6 games in total, 4 of them PL. Not much of a difference or advantage to Chelsea. In fact advantage to us as we have a few friendlies to give Chiesa, Morton, Bradley, McConnell, etc, much needed game time minus any pressure.
                        One tit for another.

I think even if they had eight games it would be no big deal given the sheer depth their first team squad has.

Just looking at the first team squad on wiki atm and I reckon they could field a second XI without having to use a single youth team level ressie the way we might use the likes of Quansah, Bradley, Elliot, Morton etc.

Ipswich is a home match. Which is helpful. We played them away on the first day of the season.

Could do with getting Konate back soonish cos our central defenders probably won't be getting much rest in the meantime now.

So, the same as Southampton then?

Maybe Chelsea will win a fitness test come May as their players are well rested, but they certainly won't be winning the league.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

                                Apologies, you're correct

2 home and 2 away league games in January
