We were so successful in the first part of the season that it's surprised everybody so, looking back, maybe that was the exceptional period and this is where we are as a squad, battling for draws against utd and forest.

    Forest. 0.39.

    Scum. 1.20

Xg isn't everything but I think a lot of people are overreacting. If anything we started the season quite poorly but got results and we were improving pre Christmas. Looking dominant from the off and not so much second half.

If we had no response last night then I'd be worried too. We've seen games like that when we concede early and then can't break the block and cant get going. But we absolutely battered them for 30 mins last night and it took goalie motm to get them a point.

Their xg is bound to be low because they had an early lead to defend.

        Yep.

Recent results don't reflect the true state of play. Teams are scoring more against us than they should be, and at the other end the goals aren't reflective of where they should be either.

If we carry on playing as we are, the goals at each end should start to better reflect the on pitch dominance, which should in turn result in improving points gathering.

Jota and Konate should both help in that regard.
        Oh I don't know.

It's how they play. It was similar at Anfield but with the goal coming late in the game instead of early.

I hate teams who play like this.

Why? It would be boring if every team tried to out pass each other like a pep team. Death by ball retention. It's good when there's a mixture of styles.

              It's anti football.

It's for teams managers who are extremely limited in ability.

It's the football of desperation and damage limitation.

              It's ugly.

It's the football of Allardyce, Bruce, Warnock and the other dinasaurs.

The interesting thing about Forest is that they were probably expecting to be nearer the relegation zone but they are so effective at it that they find themselves in the top 4.

If you like it, great for you. I don't recall you being quite so enthusiastic when we were subjected to it by Hodgson though.
              Oh I don't know.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

They don't play like a Hodgson, Allardyce or Warnock team, and they're not anti-football. They don't play for set-pieces particularly. They don't really hoof it either. They defend deep and compact, and then try and move the ball quickly along the floor when they win it, either out wide to fast wingers, or through the middle to Wood or Awoniyi.

It worked for us under Houllier, so I wouldn't knock it. You tire of it after a while, and turn on the manager quickly when it's no longer successful, but they're not some alehouse cloggers, they are a good team and they score some nice goals that are good to watch like they did last night.

As for recent results - I think it's just the frustration of the United and Spurs Carabao Cup games sticking in the memory. We've taken 11 points out of the last 15, from a run including Spurs away, Man Utd at home and Forest away. It's decent. On its own it is 84 points form, which would still most likely be enough to win the league this year. With the start we had it'd put us close to 90 if we carry on like this.

It'd be great if we could go on a run and open up a double point gap, but it's far from a crisis.

We'll just have to disagree on that. I hate it.

We're not in a crisis, of course not. But where we looked quite laboured and vulnerable at the back but won (for much of the season), now we look the same and aren't winning. The concern (at least for me) is that it seems as likely that we continue to falter as to return to winning consistently, based on how well we're playing and how tired some players look. Only time will tell, but I don't think we're the best team in the division, despite the position we're in. We will need to over perform again to win it.

But this season, who is better than us? I think the league positions are spot on. However we do need to up our game and stop the recent slippage.

I think so also. Our down turn in form is so far three draws in 6 games in the league. One defeat still all season. Top scorers and I think we’ve conceded the least goals. This season there are more teams capable of taking points of the teams at the top than ever before and let’s face it no City and a far weaker Arsenal.

All the years (decades) of being not quite good enough is why we have to enjoy moments like this. It’s better than being 6th and trying to fathom how we overturn a 14 point gap in 18 games.

One of the great truisms in sport is that pressure is a privilege. It’s so true. Every other supporter in the league would prefer to be in our position.
