He ran around a bit, was positionally suspect and shot from 40 yards at least 10 times a game instead of taking better options.

Having 1 speculative shot a season that goes in or gets close doesn't make him a class player.
sorrry mate, the riise of 2001-2004 was class, had a terrific engine and a thunderous shot on him that really worked the keeper and scored quite a few goals probably 20+

unfortunately after that he still carried on shooting after he lost his scoring touch.

I would rather have Riise than Dossena, Insua or Aurelio

Aurelio was a far better player than Riise, he was just sadly made of glass.

real shame about Aurelio if he could have kept himself fit would have certainly shored up the dodgy left handside!

Aurelio may be technically a better player but as he is injured all the time he is therefore completely useless.

No point having a Ferrari parked in the drive if you can't get it to complete a journey or even rely on it to work when your Volvo is in for a service.

To be fair, I'd like that.

Riise was part of a solid back line, and for a fullback scored plenty of goals; 21 league, 30 in all comps) before his form petered out in the final season of his career with us.

I'd love to have the Riise of old with us, ****s on everything we've had since, even Aurelio in my view.

He did play quite alot of games on the left wing so those figures are perhaps a bit misleading...

Having said that it's difficult to present a case for any of our other recent left backs being better than him.

I really think Aurelio when fit was a different class to Riise. However, Riise got a lot of stick which I think was unjustified he was a solid player and even his final season wasn't as bad as some make out. I think his main fault was his in ability to move the ball into midfield safely and without launching a long ball.

I remember a radio phone in once where they were discussing who the best LB in the league was at the time. Now I can't remember who the competition was but I do remember that the general consensus was that it was Riise. Obviously that doesn't mean anything in itself, but I do think his good years somewhat got forgotten by his last couple of years.

But I also agree that an Aurelio at the top of his game would be better than a Riise at the top of his game.

yes but isnt that just a case of people looking from afar and seeing him score his thundergoals and seeing him tearing up the left flank hence thinking he is the best defender!!!

most peoples thoughts on best fullbacks are those who look best attacking as thats all they see when its not there team ie alves, bale etc

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
