It's his job to talk things up. What do you expect him to come out and say - "We're all doomed!" ???? Seriously, I think some people on this site are as mad as a box of frogs.

We can not effect the transfer market, who we buy, sell, etc. So instead of throwing insults and moping maybe we should all wait and see for what will happen? It's either that or join SOS, but it seems people would rather question them more than they do Purslow or the Yanks.

Say we sell Insua for £5m and Lucas for £7m, roughly the figures touted about, Insua counts as home grown so factor that in when thinking about replacements.

Who is there out there that is available for less than £12m combined because there is no way Hodgson is getting 100% of the income to reinvest that is -
          A. Better
          B. Able to come in and play straight away improving us as a team.
          C. 1 of the 2 needs to be 'home grown' to keep the quota's equal.
          D. Come for less wages (again combined seeing as Purslow counts wages in transfer budgets)
          E. Wants to come and play for a Europa League side.

Those criteria will do for starters, honestly who because although football doesn't dominate every waking thought of my day I can't think of anyone.

It's very difficult to improve the sum of the whole when the parts you are trying to piece together are new to the team, cheaper (fee and wages), most likely older so set in habits and not able to learn and develop as much

As I have said previously I'd rather him just not comment

Its what PBR or Sir John Smith would have done

Thats the problem with the current owners / board when a "no comment" would suffice they would happily prefer to tell you a bunch of lies that they know can be picked apart in 5 minutes by anyone with half a brain

Even Parry (who lets face it made the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz look bright) knew when to not comment on stuff rather than digging a bigger hole for himself

Yeah, I'd agree with all of that.

                      1 of figuero or twaino,
                      1 of silva or flamini

total purchase under 12 and all 4 better players imo.

Any reported target who isn't a world beater is ****, and any equivalent player we currently have is a bag of potential that other teams should be scrabbling to pay mega money for. So, we replace an average player with an average player, whoopy****ingdoo. It really isn't worth investing emotional energy into.

I'd be quite annoyed if we let him go for a small fee. I don't think he's a particularly good player but by the same token I don't think he's awful either. He's defenitely worth having in the squad, he's a reasonably young guy and we've persisted with him too much to throw him away and let another team reap the benefits. If we sell him and he becomes a really good player elsewhere I'd be so frustrated. Unless it's a sizeable bid I don't see a point selling him because the replacement is going to be poor and it's not like we have great depth in the area conisdeirng that in all liklihood Mascherano will be sold too.

The same goes for Insua, unless there's a really good offer I don't see the point in selling him, we currently only have 1 left back in the entire squad and if we replace him with someone of similar quality it's pretty pointless, unless the fee means we can replace him with 2 players of the same quality there's really no point. And by seeing the majority of the names we've been linked with lately, it's probably better staying with what we've got.

At the end of the day, we've developed him, we atleast need to make a reasonably profit for him.

I agree in principle, and I also agree that in an ideal world he would be worth having in the squad. However, given our current situation we have to be realistic in that we don't have the luxury of having highly paid international players as squad players. If Lucas stays I imagine he would have to be first choice, which is no good.

If we have x amount of money already and we need to sell Lucas to raise enough to buy a decent replacement then we should do so, even if it doesn't give us a huge profit on him.

I think Lucas probably will end up doing okay elsewhere eventually as it happens, but I don't see him doing it for us. Maybe in different circumstances he would have done

Insua is another one who I would ideally want to see stay as back up as he might improve, but again I don't think it is possible. I am also intrigued to see if Woy can achieve something that Benitez never managed - buying a decent left back.
