I was having a conversation with another poster talking about last season. Not this season. Yes it is in the past, but that's what the conversation was about.

I said that LAST SEASON Gerrard being played DM took us forward and helped us nearly win the title. LAST SEASON. Now if you want to have a conversation about LAST SEASON I refer you to my post in which I ask you a question about... You guessed it... LAST SEASON.

    Now.....

Where you talk about this season. I agree with every word.
So is it this season or last season your referring to?

Well I look at us winning XI in a row where we looked as good as anyone in Europe as my basis for that.

The main reason was the SAS and when Sterling came behind them we looked better. To play that way we needed the diamond. So next point is why Gerrard? I would agree with those who say we'd have been tighter at the back. Despite the fact teams could've pushed up on us more without the prospect of a Gerrard pass putting us clean through (See the Fulham game as reasons teams weren't too keen to press high).

But whilst we may have been better at the back, we wouldn't have been effective going forward without Gerrard there to get the ball off the defenders and start play quickly. And not to mention all his goals & assists. Most were pens / free kicks. But they all count. See the amount of pens missed in the game to demonstrate that fact. It's not a forgone conclusion that a penalty is a goal. Whilst his corners were spot on last season.

The games where we blew the league, Lucas & Gerrard played. So could we have done better than eleven wins out of eleven with Lucas in instead of Gerrard? I'd say no. And as we weren't being anything like consistent enough to win such an amount of games prior to Gerrard moving DM, I'd say him moving there was key.

It was a one off and it was a perfect storm until we lost energy on the flanks in Hendo & brought in Lucas ( not his fault ). When we didn't replace Suarez and then lost Sturridge it was difficult to see that lasting and is why we should've switched to Lucas. Thankfully we have done.
      Forwards.......

Sorry, I'm not normally one who reacts like that. And I can't be bothered going on and on now either. I've made my points & people can believe what they want now.

So basically you're conceding that it is up for debate.

I use isn't up for debate as a figure of speech. Anything is up for debate. But I thought most people being realistic would see Gerrard was a big part of our success last season.

But I'll ask you same question as above. Would Lucas in DM in the diamond have made us a better team? And would we have therefore won the league? I think not.

The 433 was without both Sturridge & Gerrard. But I bet many wouldn't say we should have left out Sturridge too.

i think there are about half a dozen reasons we didnt win the league. Gerrard in DM was not one of them.......just as much as Lucas not playing DM was one of them... For me, the main ones were the tactics deployed against Chelsea at home, Lee Mason ****ed us at the Ethiad and 3 days later Howard Webb ****ed us at Stamford Bridge.....

Right now, I think Lucas could play the holding role in a diamond formation expertly. I think it would suit him down to the ground. I would love for us to go back to the diamond formation in the future but to be honest i'm not sure we will see it again as a long term formation.......no matter what formation we play though, i think Lucas would be one of the most important players in the line up....

The reason we didn't win the league was because Suarez was banned for 6 games at the start of the season. Vole biting cunt.

The moment Henderson got that red at the end of the City game I felt that would cost us...and it did.

Even LAST SEASON it was always more about not playing the 2 of them together though rather than either of their individual contributions or lack thereof.

The turning points wasn't choosing Gerrard over Lucas. The turning point was not choosing both of them.

I disagree. They don't play well in a 2. Neither has energy to play wide in a 3. And Sterling was amazing behind the strikers so needed to play. Was one of the other IMO.
