Ultimately, it wouldn't have been so pronounced if we didn't have the ownership situation, as you would have seen a natural evolution of the squad - replacement of ageing players etc and strengthening according to a manager's philosophy, but we were robbed of that by Hicks and Gillett. We're still getting the fallout from those cunts now and will for a few years yet.

Even with those circumstances we did have a chance last season to get back onto that path with the money at our disposal, regardless of how it came about (for those who will point to Torres leaving).

If we even brought in 1/2 decent players instead of Downing, Henderson, Carroll and Adam we'd probably be in a much stronger position but as it stands we've arguably moved backwards.

Those players may well turn out to be good, 35m 16m 20m 8m could have been spend a lot more wisely though and I don't think anyone can really argue that point.

We've been completely mismanaged on so many levels in recent years. I think the Sigurdsson thing pretty much confirms that we're going to be a lot more wary in future about who we sign, what we pay for them and the contracts that we put on the table.

Sadly, sometimes you have to make a few **** ups before getting it right. It's a learning curve though I suppose.
