Don't want Inter's cast offs, especially ones mentioned above. Take Maicon Or Sneijder off them though, and maybe throw them a few quid

If nothing else, think of the wage demands they'd have. It'll never, ever happen

He made LB his own under Jose and did a great job along with the rest of the backline. There are of course better options out there though.

                That's Chivu you're thinking of.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Liverpool set to sacrifice Meireles to finance summer spending spree

Liverpool are still in the hunt for Stewart Downing, but expect protracted negotiations with his club Aston Villa, who are keen to be seen to be trying hard to keep their best players.

The Midlands club know there is already a massive backlash brewing against new boss Alex Mcleish, and should both Downing and Ashley Young immediately leave, that would only heap further pressure on the Scotsman.

Liverpool though expect to eventually snap up Downing for around £12million, even if they have to wait all summer for their man, though they have lined Charles N'Zogbia up as a potential replacement.

They will finance what is sure to be an expensive summer - with the capture of Charlie Adam and Scott Dann also still high on their agenda - by selling some of their squad players who are surplus to requirements.

And perhaps surprisingly, that clear out could begin with Raul Meireles, who was the only one of last summer's signings to make a real impact at Anfield.

The Portugal international midfielder was voted fans' player of the year after a promising debut in the Premier League, but he failed to hold down a place in central midfield for the Reds.

Instead he was often used wide of midfield, and with Downing and perhaps another winger on their way to Liverpool, his options would be further limited, as would his chances in the centre with the capture of Jordan Henderson and Adam.

Talks have proceeded on an informal basis with Inter Milan, and now the indications are that the Italians will get their man if they offer Liverpool a profit on their initial £12million outlay...and that deal could be processed quickly.

The Reds are also in talks with Roma over the sale of Alberto Aquilani, and new Fulham boss Martin Jol is interested in Joe Cole, while Dalglish is also looking to offload Milan Jovanovic, Maxi Rodriguez, Christian Poulsen, Paul Konchesky and Philipp Degen amongst others.

I could believe that I was looking at our midfield options and if we sign Adam and Downing (or similar players) and sell Poulsen and Aquilani we have alot of options and for whatever formation I pick when everyone's fit it always seems to be Meireles on the bench.

Seeing as everyone is so sensitive to thread hijacking these days, I thought I’d move this here.

I had seen him enough previously to feel that i could make that statement and said it when we signed him, and seems to be right unfortunately, i can't account for anyone else who hadn't seen him before he came to LFC but very obvious to anyone who regularly watched him play.

I think we've established that i cannot use that function after i made a balls of it last time, and besides i'm way too lazy to check back so i shall let you do that sir seen as would love to check it out
Boredom/curiosity got the better of me.

It would turn out you were right, you had your reservations (or ‘observations’ as you put it ) about Meireles from the start, ‘crap’ I think you described him as in your first post. But nah, you did say you were concerned that he wasn’t suitable for this league so that’s fair enough.

Who else was with you though, and who all thought Meireles was a pussy before the United game?

Step forward Rudo. Crap at everything including tackling according to this fountain of knowledge.

El Matador had an opinion: He also thought he was useless at everything, which is unlike him as he’s usually a fair judge.

Bar that I could only find one other person making an issue of Meireles tackling, and like the other two he also accused him of not being able to shoot, pass, header, run, skip or moonwalk either, so take from that what you will.

So why such a sudden change of heart, why is Meireles now universally recognised as such a pussy? Has it anything to do with one mistake during a high profile game that was replayed time and time again? What caused so many people who were demanding that Roy play Meireles in the centre to suddenly change there mind and now argue that he’s not suitable to play there? How can they come to this conclusion when he hasn’t even played in this position since to prove otherwise? Oh that’s right, he’s a pussy who can’t tackle and it’s obvious to everyone who watches him. Not so obvious before January though when he was actually playing in CM.

There was a lesser profile game towards the end of the season when Meireles won 7 out of 7 tackles. That’s the highest 100% win ratio that I think I’ve seen (not that I check that often though). Would Meireles still be so heavily criticised for his tackling if Alan Hansen had of highlighted this on MOTD or if Sky had of constantly replayed these successful challenges?

I’m not saying Meireles is a great tackler by any means, but I do think some people (not everyone) are guilty of going OTT and making too big an issue of it, despite there possibly not being as much evidence as they think to support it. I also wonder if like Kuyt and Lucas before him, Meireles might suffer from extremely selective viewing from some fans, when the 99 things he does right are conveniently overlooked and that one mistake is plastered over message boards.

Ahh well, looks like he might be off now so what a waste of time this discussion was. Puts my mind at ease though.

i wasn't nailing my colours to the mast or anything, just from watching him previously over last few years for club and country i got that impression, and felt i could form an honest opinion about him.

As i said, anyone who has watched Meireles prior to joining us, it was very obvious what type of player he was and what his strengths and weaknesses were. It's no secret that i'm not a fan of the lad but IMO i have been pretty balanced about him since joining LFC. The whole 'pussy' thing, fair enough maybe a bit harsh from many of us, but he has been shying away from tackles his whole career, just not his game maybe 'timid' is bit more of a fairer description. His strengths lie in making forward runs and shooting. I think he'd make a good squad player but by no means the starting 11 come next season.

As for everyone else's opinion, maybe many people hadn't watched Meireles enough to form a view on it before he signed for us, but certainly IMO it wasn't a surprise that the rough and tumble of CM was/is a bit too much for him. Several of my mates, LFC supporters and non LFC supporters (nobody perfect ) who had seen Meireles play good few times beforehand(some live) said as much.

Anyways i wouldn't be too bothered if he went, if it meant something good coming our way, also if he stayed IMO he would also make a good squad player.

I would like to see him given at least another year as I thought he did well enough for his debut year and would expect further improvement again. Although his purple patch for us last year does not accurately reflect his goal scoring returns from previous seasons, what it did show is that he has excellent technique when striking a ball (see Chelsea) and gets in some very good positions. I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t develop into a good goal scoring midfielder in the right system, under a good manager. 5 goals and 3 assists under Kenny isn’t a bad return. What I do agree with though is it’s hard to see where he fits in next year unless it’s part of a midfield three. For that reason I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he sold him for a decent fee, but for the minute he should be ahead of Henderson IMO.

BTW this is what Soccernet say about him which is quite funny after yesterday’s discussion…

Tough-guy Meireles loves nothing better than a full-on battle with a worthy opponent and he has gained praise for his work-rate and skills as an all-round midfielder.

Strengths: Dominant and dynamic, he loves a physical battle and has a good range of passing. Is also capable of the spectacular.

Weaknesses: Has a bit of a short fuse and gets criticism for his style of football not being aesthetically pleasing.

Style: Tough, uncompromising, a classy all-round midfielder.

If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
