Can't see it mentioned, but Sterling have been nominated for the Golden Boy award this year (together with Markovic), given to the best performing U21 player in the calendar year. Also considered favorite by many. From the list below it's hard to see who the challenger is, especially considering that defenisve minded player hardly ever wins any awards.
Nominees for the Golden Boy award: Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Kurt Zouma (Chelsea), John Stones (Everton), Raheem Sterling, Lazar Markovic. (Liverpool), Adnan Januzaj, Luke Shaw (Manchester United), Nabil Bentaleb and Eric Dier (Tottenham), Gerard Deulofeu (Sevilla), Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao), Munir El Haddai (Barcelona), Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid), Sandro Ramirez (Barcelona) Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo), Bernardeschi Franco (Fiorentina), Kingsley Coman (Juventus), Keita Balde Diao (Lazio), Mateo Kovacic (Inter), Hakan Calhanoglu (Bayer Leverkusen), Gianluca Gaudino (Bayern Munich), Mathias Ginter (Borussia Dortmund), Julian Green (Hamburg), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Bayern Munich), Maximilian Meyer (Schalke), Marquinhos (Paris Saint-Germain), Benjamin Mendy (Marseille), Lucas Ocampos (Monaco), Divock Origi (Lille), Adrien Rabiot (Paris Saint-Germain), Bruma (Galatasaray), Gonzalez (Basel), Arkadiusz Milik (Ajax), Alexander Mitrovic (Anderlecht), Nikola Ninkovic (Partizan Belgrade), Dennis Praet (Anderlecht), Oliver Torres (Porto), Tonny Vilhena (Feyenoord), Jetro Willems (PSV), Luka Zahovic (Maribor).
We have a very promising team indeed, Sterling, Coutinho, Markovic, Origi and Can are only 20-21 years old, it's insane really, add to that Manquillo, Flanagan and Ibe and maybe more. We wont see the best of these players for maybe another three years. That's still leaving Henderson, Sturridge, Sakho, Balotelli and Moreno who are about 25 or younger right?
* The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Maximilian Meyer would be the one that I would see as the main challenger to Sterling from those I know of on that list.
Having said that, there are a few of the defensive candidates that were very very good. Willem for PSV, Ginter for Dortmund (although his big performances were as a Freiburg player), and Laporte for Bilbao are all stand outs for me. The latter pair in particular look really good for 20 year old Centre backs.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness
Laporte looks absolutly amazing, will be a huge asset for Bilbao or another team in the next decade. So composed, controls the ball well, positioning is already exceptional - got the package already I'd say!
But no defender / defensive midfielder have so far to win it...
Meyer is a good shout! Munir perhaps got his breakthrough a bit to late this year. But debuting for Barca B and A side as well as Spain U19, U21 and the national team all in one year is quite something! Only seen him 2-3 times but Hakan Calhanoglu have looked quite something for Leverkusen!
No gripes with Sterling but would like to see him add that little bit of compusure when through on goal or presented with a scoring opportunity and also for his goal tally to improve.
The lad has ability no doubts but potential to be even better, world class? Maybe but aways to go yet and hopefully BR will help him improve further.
