2 and a bit mill ? Sterlings market value? yeah right!

Although, maybe that figure takes into account our negotiating skills.

It's all bollocks tbh, a player is worth what someone is willing to pay.

ooh, is that a football cliche ?

EXCLUSIVE: Teen ace Sterling wants £50k-a-week deal to stay at Liverpool

Raheem Sterling is poised to reject Liverpool’s initial offer of a new contract after talks opened last week.

Sterling, who has burst into the first team at Anfield this season, has 18 months to run on a deal worth £2,000 a week plus appearance bonuses and has clubs keen on luring him away from Merseyside.

He is 18 next month and although money was not discussed at the meeting, Liverpool have been preparing terms in the region of £20,000 a week.

Sterling’s camp, however, have made it clear they would reject such an offer and consider their options. They believe he deserves closer to £50,000 a week, putting him in the same bracket as other established first-teamers. Stewart Downing, barely picked this season, earns £60,000 a week.

Sterling has made such an impact that he got his first England call-up for Wednesday’s friendly in Sweden.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was full of praise for his winger.

'He has been fantastic this season since he has broken in,’ he said. ‘It’s a great effort by him. He deserves his call-up.’

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s boss has said he does not mind that he missed out on working with Fernando Torres as he has Luis Suarez to call upon instead. Torres has not scored against Liverpool since leaving the club for £50million in January 2011 and has struggled at Chelsea.

Suarez, by contrast, goes into tomorrow’s contest as arguably the most dangerous forward in England.

‘Torres decided to move on and Liverpool got in a world-class striker who has been absolutely breathtaking, particularly this season,’ Rodgers said. ‘Luis is world class and we are delighted with him. Liverpool did terrifically out of the deal and we have got a top player here.'

I'd give him £50k a week. Well worth it. No doubt spurs will offer him £80k a week while Ayre ****s about and we loose him for pennies.

I'd pay him too. He is regular now and will only get better.

If we play this right we could have a top notch winger for decade and more and that comes without paying a fortune to acquire him (Thank you Rafa).

We really cannot **** this one up.

I absolutely would NOT pay him £50k a week. There isn't an 18yr old on the planet worth that much, Sterling might be incredible when he's 25 but there is still a possibility that it all just fizzlles out a bit with him too. Giving him that sort of money would set a horrendus precedent with our younger players, blow our wage structure apart, and leave us with nowhere to go with the lad when he turns 20 and wants to renegotiate again for £150k/week. **** that. At his age with his prospects, something in the 20-25k range, rising yearly based on performances/appearances or whatever, would be a huge deal for a kid his age, whatever his talent.

Not that I believe that figure for a moment, sounds like the Mail pulling figures out of thin air.

Even 20 seems a bit much for a first contract.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Its an appauling indictment of the state of modern football that a kid who is not yet 18, still very very raw and with a lot of physical development left to do, let alone tactical & footballing development, can even be talked about in bull**** articles as wanting $50k/week,and that some fans instantly want us to pay it. 50 THOUSAND pounds a WEEK. Jesus christ. That would kill most teenagers I've ever met within a year or two. Even the lesser amounts are still disgustingly obscene, but at least you can see ~£20k being within an existing structure.

To put it in some context, fake Ronaldo's first contract at ManU after a €12m transfer at 18-19 was apparently about £20k.

If Raheem Sterling is genuinely going to **** us about with demands at that level at this point of his career.... which it has to be said, we don't really know he even remotely is going to do... what hope do we really have with the lad long term? On our wing for a decade? Hah!

I'd offer him £30k per week so he doesn't lose touch with reality.

His age should not have any bearings on how much he should be earning.

His wages should be based purely and simply on his current contribution and his future impact on the team and as it stands atm he is our first choice winger and regular member of starting 11.

                              Of course his age matters.

For a 17 year old, he's brilliant. If however we're judging him purely on current ability alone rather than potential. actually he has a lot of things lacking from his game he needs to improve. He is extremely raw, his passing and crossing need work, his decision making isn't great and his shooting is, for the most part, poor. If he were 25, would we think he was consistent enough and had enough end product etc?

Assaidi is on something like 20k/week. Joe Allen on 35k. You really think we should pay him a lot more than those 2? Already?

If we pay him £50k/week now where do we go with his next contract?

If we pay him 50k/week now won't we by the same rules have to pay Suso something similar? And what about the other youngsters getting chances in the first team? Should we give Wisdom parity with Johnson and Enrique?

And probably most importantly, if we pay him £50k/week now, how on earth do we keep his feet on the ground? Seriously, it sounds to a degree like its going to be hard enough anyway, but this lad has an awful lot to do before he can truly say he's made it. If he's not happy at this point of his career with earning as much in a week as most people do in a year, and if he's not going to show a little loyalty to the club who are doing their best to develop him in the right way, then I have serious worries about his mentality and the people around him.

Not to get knickers in a twist over all this, even if that report is accurate, which I doubt, I'm sure we'll come to a sensible resolution that won't see the club being held to ransom.

Come on Mr M, he's already got 2 kids and is clearly planning on having a large family so needs the cash to keep them.
Citeh will deffo be sniffing around and turning his head as 50k is not a lot for them.
