Think Milner will be a smart signing. Versatile, well rounded and consistent. We can't break the bank on every player we get, it makes sense to maximise our funds available for bringing in goalscorers.

Would be very curious as to what position he would fill if got.
A lot of people are talking about him playing in a CM role, but cannot help but think that Milner would be got to play in a wide position be it wide right or as a right sided wing back.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Big game player with a great work ethic, can only be a good thing for the dressing room and he's underrated in terms of quality due to how hard he works and his willingness to play anywhere you ask him.
Perfect role model for the young players coming through, dare I even say potential captain?
It's a big salary to be paying someone who's never been a regular at a top club, but I guess that's the way it goes with free transfers.
He's a good player, not a world beater but I'm behind the signing.
Provided we supplement it with goals....big signings, top quality and goals.

I think that question is exactly the reason why we are after him. Experienced versatility

He is versatile, but I am not sure that I would want him brought in for a CM role.
I think that if we went back to wing backs next season that Milner could be really good in the RWB slot, and good enough to make the position his own for a few seasons.
I have always been more impressed with his wide play than when I have seen him in a more central role. It's not that I think he cannot do a job in the centre but rather that I would like to see us get someone even better playing in the centre and have Milner out wide in the same team.
If we got him and played him primarily in the centre I would not be as happy, but still not enough to be against signing him, as I think we need a bigger injection of quality in the centre than Milner would bring and let's be honest if he comes to us he will be doing so on the basis that he will get plenty of game time.

Aye. We are going to seriously lack in more experienced heads in the dressing room next year, Milner has been playing regularly in this league for a good 12 years yet is still just the right side of 30. He is rarely injured from the look of his record, versatile, and a committed professional. If we were spending £15m on him I would be worried about priorities, but on a free for not entirely disproportionate wages in context? Absolutely.

I think he is better wide too, I don't think anyone would see Milner as a classic CM however I can see him on the side in a diamond or midfield 3 along with Henderson and a new CM, RWB in the 3-4-1-2 we used this year, right in a 4-4-2 or filling in higher up the pitch in case of injuries. We've had so few players this season who have demonstrated consistent versatility, every formation change suits some but hampers others it has seemed so we desperately need additions who can demonstrate better tactical flexibility imo.
