Jurgen Klopp waits in Liverpool wings as Brendan Rodgers fights for his job

Liverpool have been alerted to the German's availability with the next three games deciding Brendan Rodgers's future

    By Chris Bascombe
    2:51PM BST 24 Sep 2015

Jürgen Klopp, the former Borussia Dortmund coach, has increased the pressure on Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers by making it known he would prematurely end his year-long sabbatical for the right Premier League club.

A day after former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti’s name was heavily linked with a move to Merseyside, those close to Klopp further alerted Anfield officials to the possibility of recruiting a high-calibre replacement should they end Rodgers’s tenure.

Liverpool are adamant no discussions have been held with any managers as Rodgers prepares to face Aston Villa tomorrow – and despite Klopp’s ambitions to manage in England, he has made no specific reference to Liverpool and confirms there has been no contact – but the timing is significant.

There is no doubt Rodgers is clinging to his job.

Klopp has spoken previously about the attraction of working in the Premier League, where he has been linked with Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United. Last July he said: “It is important to make the next step. And I think England is the only country where I should work next to Germany because it’s the only country where I know the language.”

Liverpool are one of the few English clubs with the clout to attract a manager of Klopp’s pedigree.

Wednesday’s penalty shoot-out victory over League Two side Carlisle United in the Capital One Cup served only to raise further doubts about Rodgers’ future.

The standard of results and performances this season has left the manager’s most ardent boardroom supporters uncertain how much longer he can survive. Those disgruntled within Fenway Sports Group want change, which leaves all eyes on principal owner and majority shareholder John W Henry.

Should a change follow, Klopp has long been considered the most likely fit for FSG. Indeed, when they were assessing managers ahead of appointing Rodgers in 2012, it was Klopp’s work in Germany – overcoming the financial muscle of Bayern Munich to win two Bundesliga titles – that became a blueprint for how FSG wanted to operate.

Klopp’s availability, allied to that of out-of-work Ancelotti, offers a ready-made alternative for Henry should he decide Rodgers is unable to reverse a decline that began with the sale of Luis Suárez in the summer of 2014. However, there is no guarantee that Klopp would be as attractive to FSG now as he was during his most successful spell in Dortmund and, if Rodgers went, Liverpool would explore numerous options.

Klopp won the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012, a year in which he completed the ‘double’ in German football. He lost the 2013 Champions League final to Bayern at Wembley, and opted for a break from football at the end of last season after a difficult final year.

Ancelotti, meanwhile, is a multiple title and Champions League winner across Europe. If Liverpool seek a safe pair of hands having earlier favoured an up-and-coming coach, there is no doubt the Italian will have his boardroom supporters. Liverpool are seeking immediate results with the existing squad rather than another long-term project involving another era of rebuilding. The fact that two highly respected managers are available and seemingly open to the prospect of moving to Anfield is leaving Rodgers even more vulnerable.

In 2012, Liverpool were also interested in Ajax’s Frank De Boer, who won four consecutive league titles in Holland. Should the club change their coaching structure, former club captain Steven Gerrard’s name is sure to be a topic of conversation as Liverpool seek to establish how soon he is reintegrated back into the club.

After facing Villa tomorrow, Liverpool play Sion in the Europa League and then travel to Everton for the Merseyside derby on Oct 4. That fixture already has a defining look about it, coming before a two-week international break. Many will be circling the first week of October as a pivotal period.

The unequivocal boardroom backing that was offered after the most sobering defeats last season – specifically the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Villa and 6-1 loss to Stoke City – has evaporated.

FSG always said they would make sound judgments based on results and performances, but more studiously with an eye on the longer-term. As a Liverpool team valued at £130 million toiled to get beyond the centre-halves of Carlisle, the here and now was so wretched few dared to think how much worse it could get.

Henry is not in the business of making knee-jerk decisions, but any judgment made in the coming weeks cannot be assumed to be such.

Rodgers remained in post midway through last season – and he also survived the miserable end to the last campaign – because the club did not want to act based on a poor run or one disappointing campaign given how well the manager and team performed a year earlier.

Should Rodgers pay the price in the next few weeks, it will not be a direct consequence of what has happened at the start of this season but a culmination of the last 14 months.

Reading Bascombe's article has a bit of inevitability about the whole thing. It really is just a matter of when not if Rodgers gets sacked. The bit about people in Fenway wanting change is very interesting.

        • No contact between Fenway Sports Group and Klopp's advisors yet
        • Carlo Ancelotti has also been strongly linked with the Reds' top job

Brendan Rodgers has seen his position become even more vulnerable after Jurgen Klopp signalled his desire to end his sabbatical and manage in England.

After Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday that Carlo Ancelotti had been sounded out by Fenway Sports Group over the prospect of replacing Rodgers – Liverpool have denied that was the case – Klopp has let it be known he is ready to start working once more.

Klopp, the charismatic German manager, has long been the bookmakers’ favourite to replace Rodgers and he would be the choice of many Liverpool fans, if and when FSG take the decision to end the 42-year-old’s spell in charge.

Though Klopp has not made any public comment, it is understood he would relish the opportunity to revive Liverpool’s ailing fortunes but, as yet, there has been no contact between FSG and Klopp’s advisors.

Rodgers, whose side scrapped through their Capital One Cup tie with Carlisle on penalties, returned to work as normal on Thursday and was the last senior member of the club’s coaching staff to leave their Melwood training base shortly before 6pm.

Ian Ayre, Liverpool’s Chief Executive, had spent part of the afternoon at Melwood – he now has an office there, as well one in the city centre – but that was not an indication that Rodgers was about to receive the news that FSG want to go in a different direction.

John W Henry and Tom Werner remain the best known members of FSG but, ultimately, the decision on Rodgers’ future will be taken by Mike Gordon, who is FSG Sports President and conducted the end of season review in June in which Rodgers was given a reprieve.

Many will wonder why FSG are prepared to act now, given there seemed to be a natural opportunity to make a break after Liverpool were thrashed 6-1 by Stoke on the final day of last season and especially after £80million was invested on new players in the summer.

Rodgers will be without the two men who took up 75 per cent of that expenditure against Aston Villa on Saturday – Christian Benteke, the £32.5million striker, has damaged his hamstring and £29million Brazil international Roberto Firmino has injured his back.

It is doubtful whether a win will do anything for Rodgers’ long-term prospects but Danny Ings, whose performances against Norwich and Carlisle have quickly endeared him to the Kop, believes it is crucial that the squad accept the pressure that is on them.

‘The expectation is a lot greater at a club like Liverpool than where I have come from, but I find that a real positive,’ said Ings, who showed the responsibility that is required when he volunteered to take the fifth penalty in the shootout with Carlisle.

‘I use it as a fuel to motivate myself to do well for the fans, the staff, the manager and I’m sure the other players feel exactly the same way. We’ve gone through a sticky patch as a team and it is just important for us now to start winning games and go on a run.’

Can't see BR being at LFC for too much longer. Just hope FSG make the right choice as his replacement i.e. ideally a high calibre manager with European experience. It will be a costly exercise - sacking Rodgers and his staff, and bringing in a quality management team - but the prospect of slipping further behind the top four (outside the Champions League) will be even costlier (BR's mandate was to make us a top four team and reduce the wage bill).

Thanks for 2013/14 - it was awesome.

I suspect we'll scab a win against Villa and Rodgers will get an undeserved reprieve.

I expect that if Rodgers is still here after the Villa and Sion games, we'll go into those tough October fixtures sitting back, and trying to nick something on the break. Rodgers knows they'll make or break him, and I can see him going all Mourinho on them, just like the Man Utd game.

I'm sick of the ****ty articles too, which are so vague and don't really commit one way or the other. It stinks of the club briefing the press, and it's just like how a politician would do it.

I wish there was a reset button and everyone from the board to the manager, and some players would do one.

If we win then surely a reprieve would be deserved?

Nope, he should have been sacked in the summer and a win against Villa won't change that. We regularly play ****e and go on ****e runs and until he shows he can solve that he should go. But he shouldn't get the change to even try.

Nothing will change that as history cannot be changed. But as a bloke trying his best to retain the job, 3 points in his next game surely deserves the chance to be at the helm for the next match?

Mike Gordon really making himself look a man out his depth, having him and Ayre making football decisions seems ridiculous, he knew **** all about the game 5 years ago, looks like he still doesnt.

Only a win with style should offer any reprieve even then Rodgers career here has shown several small runs of form. To late now we need a change
