He did. We were full off it in the summer. guess this is why we are all so disappointed right now. From August.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is confident they will not let last season's title heartbreak affect their challenge for the Premier League this season.

The Reds narrowly missed out on ending their 24-year wait for England's top prize when they were pipped to top spot by Manchester City in May.

It has been suggested Liverpool might struggle to recover from the disappointment of seeing the title slip out of their hands, but Rodgers insists the experience will prove to be motivation to secure success this season.

"Remembering that feeling, that’s what drives you,” said Rodgers. "The Chelsea game was the one. A draw even at Palace was alright.

"But if you look at the history of the winning teams they have always gone close. You look at the United team that won it in 1993, they came close in 1992 when they just lost it to Leeds.

"They came back the following year and won it. That set up an era of winning for them. They won the Champions League (in 1999) and they just missed out two years before.

"Part of the process of winning is being able to lose like we did. What it has done with this team and this group, it has made us even more unified and stronger to be more successful in the future.

"We have got players that have had disappointments in their career and picked themselves up again.

"For me there was no real hangover, I was just so proud of how we as a whole club got together last season. The supporters talking about making them dream and there is no negative in it for me.

"We went so close but it is only the beginning for us. I’m super hungry to be a champion and succeed and we have shown we have the credentials to do that.

"The Premier League is going to be as competitive as ever. There will be six odd teams who can challenge for it but we’ve reinforced the squad and we will go into it with even more belief with a group of young players who are hungry too.”

Rodgers, who took over at Anfield in the summer of 2012, has set his sights on winning his trophy as Liverpool this season

"I want a trophy this year,” he said. “My sole aim in the first three years was to get us into the Champions League"

"I knew what it meant to the supporters, the city, the taxi drivers, the people, the businesses... so my drive in that period was to get us back. Now we’re in it, I want the club to win the big trophies again.

"That’s what I’ve said to the players. The expectancy this season is continual improvement. Can we go to the next level? We want to win.

"Our priority will be the Premier League but we want to do well in the Champions League too as it’s a big competition."

        Forgot about those statements.

Honestly, I am not disappointed that we are unable to challenge for the title this season. After Suarez left, I had some doubts on whether we would still be able to mount a title challenge.

I am disappointed that we have regressed from the original expectations of competing for CL places this season.

I was sure he'd been bigging us up, and why not at that point?

And then Suarez leaving was a mighty blow.

I am disappointed that we have gone from free flowing footballing buccaneers, to a ramshackle bunch of also-rans.

Last seasons title challenge was something very few people expected. It was definitely ahead of schedule. However this season, we seem to have fallen behind in terms of the original planning.
He's on record saying a title challenge in his 3rd season was the target when he was given the job. He mentioned it last season while bigging himself up for getting there a year early.

Here is the start of the excuses

"All I'll ever do is all I've ever done in any job, and that's promise to fight for my life for the supporters and the people of the city"

It has been difficult and over the last couple of years some of our top players have gone out, Jamie Carragher in the first year, Pepe Reina and Luis Suárez.
Funny he mentions Reina when it was him who wanted him out.He also reckons he was a top player, if he was he should still be here. Its a worrying tone hes taken lately with regards to top talent coming in. "This is Liverpool. We have to be in the running for the world’s best.” , yes we should be but we never are.

I wish BR would keep his gob shut a bit more.

FSG, as I think I might have mentioned before, aren't my cup of tea at the moment either.

I don't know what people expect. Even if it was, he's hardly going to admit it's all his fault.

To my mind, Brendan Rodgers is a brilliant & innovative coach. When he gets the blend right, his teams will be a joy to watch. Without question, when FSG came in he and Ayre were under orders to cut the wage bill drastically. Even with that, we've come very close to breaching FFP rules.

The reason we have / or nearly have broke this rules, is because after the success we had with Kenny, they went for broke and backed him in the market with big money. That's still hurting us this season, thankfully from the summer that's out of the way and increased revenues also come into play.

Anyway, back on point. What this club is massively struggling with is player recruitment. For a number of different reasons. It's been the same issue since Rodgers walked through that door. If we can't sign the top players we have to look elsewhere, and it's no surprise to see us hit the wall. It was always going to happen.

We had Maxi, Bellamy & Kuyt go first year. Then Reina & Carra have gone. Then Agger & Suarez and next Gerrard. Now some of those players weren't the same quality of what they were. And some of them needed to be moved on. But we get nostalgic about them leaving because we have failed to adequately replace them.

I don't care who the manger is tbh. With LFC recruiting as they are now, we are going nowhere. It was easier back then under Rafa. We were champions league regulars and he had the contacts needed to get some good players.

This transfer committee should have the contacts, that's why we're employing them. But it seems to me they're all just a waste of money. I don't want Rodgers to go. I think you put him in the right recruitment environment and he thrives. But it's hard to argue against the idea that a DOF with a host of contacts would've been a better fit for FSG & this club.

I think he's getting fed up of towing the party line and being held accountable for a failure to land top players.

Maybe is he stopped bi*ching to the press and got on with organizing a defence, he would win something which would help to attract players a la Benitez. There are teams in a worse financial position than us but the managers acknowledge they have to work with what they've got and get on with it.

This by DannyMan2006 is spot on in my opinion, Rodgers has made mistakes but he is 41 and learning on the job with regards to challenging for top 4 and juggling Europe.

With FFP we have to balance the books, simple as that. With the expansion of the main stand and new commercial deals kicking in every single penny counts, that's why most of our contract negotiations take so long, that's why we have heavily incentivised contracts, it's not the club being ****, it's not Ayre being incompetent it's the club trying to be competitive within the rules of FFP.

If you want to blame anyone blame David Moores, he was the one who was complacent and did bugger all to develop the ground and increase our revenue incomes
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Rodgers should ask Sammi Hyypia and Jamie Carragher to be our defensive coaches, cos ain't nobody else ****ing teaching this at the club

It'd be nice to have some figures of their stature at the club for the first team. Nothing against Mike Marsh, as he is someone who came through the club playing wise, but I feel that for the size of our club, and for players to truly understand what it takes in the modern era, someone like Hyypia or Carragher (part time?) would be healthy alongside Marsh. Surely Hyypia would relish the chance to observe how Rodgers works and take a few training sessions to keep himself involved?
