Steven Gerrard is scheduled to give Liverpool a timely injury lift on Monday by returning to full training following an ankle problem.
The Liverpool captain has missed the club's past eight matches having developed an infection in an ankle injury suffered in training in October. The midfielder has been in light training for the past few weeks and stepped up his rehabilitation during a trip to Abu Dhabi in recent days, where he trained with Al Jazira.
The Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, has consistently refused to set a comeback date for the 31-year-old but, with full training planned for Monday, Gerrard should be available during a hectic period for the club.
Dalglish, whose team have at least 11 matches to play before the end of January across the league and both domestic cups, said on Thursday: "Steven is progressing and training really well. Everyone here is delighted with his progress. We will have to wait and see on when he comes back. I am not going to set any targets. He will be ready when he's ready."
Gerrard has made only nine starts for Liverpool since Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson as the manager in January, having been sidelined for six months with a groin injury. He marked his return this season with a goal in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United and his recovery will be keenly awaited at a club that recently lost the influential midfielder, Lucas Leiva, for the rest of the season with a ruptured*cruciate.
Lucas's replacement for the defeat at Fulham, Jay Spearing, is serving a three -match suspension for his straight red card at Craven Cottage.
That rug really tied the room together.

DALGLISH: CREDIT TO GERRARD MEDICS
Kenny Dalglish has revealed Liverpool's quick-thinking medical staff may have saved captain Steven Gerrard's career.
Gerrard, 31, has been sidelined since late October with a mystery ankle infection which then attacked his body.
It has been a frustrating nine months for the Liverpool talisman as he only returned to action in September from a six-month spell out with a groin injury.
But he is set to provide some Christmas cheer for the Reds as he nears a first-team comeback.
Dalglish, who has thrown a protective blanket around his skipper, believes the outcome could have been much worse for the England star.
"If it hadn't been dealt with quickly and properly it could have ended up more serious," the Scot told The People.
"But he got fantastic treatment and it's been sorted and solved.
"The credit goes to our medical people who identified it and reacted. It was unknown territory for us."
The Reds boss has been boosted by his imminent return and has praised Gerrard's mental toughness.
He said: "When you consider what he has been through he has done unbelievably well.
"But he has a strong character and that is reflected in coming through what he's been through.
"He is desperate to play but we need to manage it properly."Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news...medium=twitterGerrard in contention for Boxing Day return

Steven Gerrard will offer Liverpool the perfect Christmas gift with a return to first team action over the festive period.
The Liverpool skipper was back in full training with the rest of his team-mates on Monday for the first time since being hospitalised by a career-threatening mystery infection.
Gerrard spent last week in Abu Dhabi, enjoying some warm weather training with the Al Jazira club, and returned to the UK bursting for competitive action.
If all goes to plan, the midfielder will rejoin the squad over the holiday period - and with Liverpool facing at least 11 matches before the end of January, his comeback couldn't be more timely.
The Anfield talisman has made only nine club starts since boss Kenny Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson in January.
He suffered a serious groin injury in March, and elected to undergo surgery, which kept him out for six months. His comeback was complicated by an infection in his leg, but he made a start against Manchester United in mid-October.
But then he suffered another infection, this time in the ankle area, which was so serious that Dalglish even wondered if it would threaten Gerrard's career - as the Scot admitted at the weekend.
"If it wasn't dealt with properly, it could have been more serious. But he had fantastic treatment. It's been sorted, it's been solved," said Dalglish.
"It was a one-off, not relevant to anything else he's had, so the credit goes to the people who identified the problem. The hard part was when he was first injured. It was just a freak.
"He's done unbelievably well. He does have a really strong character. He's come through and he's desperate to play."
If all goes well this week, Gerrard could even be in contention for the Boxing Day visit of Blackburn.
Although, with Dalglish urging caution as he looks at the bigger picture, a more likely target is the game against Newcastle on December 30.

I wonder if playing Stevie in an advanced role could improve our finishing problem. He's always been a good finisher himself and I'm sure would provide plenty of assists.
