I didn't think he was any good to be honest. Great assist for the goal, but otherwise quite a few wrong passes (and some of them in dangerous areas) and a bit sluggish in defense. Johnson on the other hand was brilliant, MOTM for me.

My problem is that most of those criticisms (and many of those raised by others) relate directly to the tactics England employ. Gerrard is deep as are all the other midfielders so the only passing options are often long and hence low odds. He doesn't get around the pitch much because the plan is to sit deep.

For me Gerrard played his role well, but the definition of his role was limited and a bit rubbish. How he does in this tournament is for me a very poor indicator if his real ability or how ageing is impacting on it.

I definitely agree with the first part, there is no doubt his role in this team is nowhere near to what it should be and it is the reason why he's unable to carry the team the way he is capable of doing it. But still, I thought he made quite a few wrong short passes, and France players found it rather easy to get past him. Wrong position or not, I think he could have done better in that role too. But that's just me, maybe the reason really is the entire team setup which is incredibly static and unimaginative. That's Roy for you.

But anyway, I was referring to the France match, thought he was much better against Sweden.
