We could say the same about Skrtel, 2 brutal mistakes have cost us 2 goals

I thought we perhaps got a glimpse of where Gerrard is going to fit in under BR. He will not be so much the dynamic midfielder breaking forward, he still has the ability to pick a pass, change the direction of play and put in a few tackles. I think we are being introduced to Stevie G mkIII. He put in a dynamite cross in the build up to Skrtels goal, and I think still has a huge part to play.

The great thing is we are hopefully no longer 100% reliant on him.

Stevie is going through the usual world cup/Euros hangover so will be around Oct/Nov before he'll be able to shake it off!...Watch this space!

He said he intends to play for England for as long as he is needed so that will not happen.

Stevie might have been a decent enough player in this tournament but the trouble is you need more than that from the center midfielder and the Captain. Dont you? He had some decent crosses and ran the extra mile but other than that I cant see the magic. At all. I dont think Gerrard is anywhere near what he was before that injury in 2008 or 9. He is not a gamebreaker anymore. Sure, he will have the odd match where he lights up but is that really useful at this level? You want to build around that?

I'm not trying to take a dump on an Icon to annoy any of you. I just think there is more hype left than anything else when it comes to Gerrard. The skill, pace, grit and pure will to succeed has left and I can't see it coming back.
Just noticed this post from ages ago. Just commenting on the lamentable Flintstone formation 4-4-2, beloved of Hodgson and Dalglish. I didn't know Greece used it but, apart from England, it was also used by Ireland, Sweden and Ukraine in the competition, all of whom were thoroughly exposed by teams using modern formations.

          That is all

I honestly dont see what difference a 4-4-2 or a 4-5-1 makes. Formations change in fashion, or evolve (if you want to sound more educated). I mean, we pressed high up the pitch under Benitez, and he tended to play two up (albeit with a withdrawn striker). Evans switched to a 5-3-2 to exploit..? the fact Macca could not cross for ****. That was all the rage across Europe, now everyone plays four at the back again.

At the end of the day, great teams have great players. You may be able to squeeze a better performance tailoring your tactics to the players you have (and the opposition), but I think any team with great players should be able to be flexible enough to do this anyway. The way you play is more important than the general shape, and how each player plays his part.

People say its great we no longer rely on Gerrard. Fact of the matter is we would still be reliant on him if he was as good as he was.

That said, he's still clearly a top player for us and will adapt. He'll be in the goals and assists again this year of that I'm sure. I fancy him for maybe contributing towards 20 league goals. A good number for a midfield player. Maybe more if the team picks up.

But he was as good as he was. He can't have been anything else. He can't have been better and he can't have been worse.

That's pretty much what "as good as he was" means.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Dan, i think its a good think that we dont have to rely on gerrard. it means we now have some strength in depth. it used to be stevie, carra or torres who carried us, but now there is every chance there will be several stand out performances across the team. this doesnt mean that stevie will not still put in some great performances for the team.
we will be stronger because we work better as a team rather than a couple of decent individuals, and then a few other lads in the same coloured shirt.
look how we have struggled in the past if lucas, stevie, torres, etc were out injured. now it would still be a pain, but we have cover of an adequate standard.
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

His point is he was once so good that any team would be better for the old Stevie G being in it. So, effectively, we do miss the player he was but wouldn't miss the player he is.

At least I think that's what he's saying. It took me a bit of time to work it out. Probably just because it's late and I'm tired.

I agree with Danny on the whole, although I think 20 league goals is optimistic.
