I did the Anfield tour a couple of weeks back and in the director's/vip lounge area (or the one with the bar in the corner) there are loads of photos and mosaics of Liverpool managers throughout the years - yet not one of Benitez.

Am I correct in saying that Hodgson had a load of Benitez related things removed? Or a lot of Benitez pictures etc were disposed of shortly after he left?

no i cant. you're right. However, my personal opinion i wouldnt want him back if he manages one of spurs, chelsea, arsenal, united, city. I see these teams as our rivals.
