I love Rafa and I wouldn't begrudge him a move to a top club. Obviously I'd rather he didn't go to Chelsea, but he wants to manage and compete - that's fair enough. He loves England. I'm sure that if he could choose, he'd come back to Liverpool.

I'd be really split if he went to Chelsea.
Obviously I want him to do well in his next job, but not to the detriment of us.

Paul Edwards @pauledwards1973
Typical Rafa, he decided to lay into Hodgson calling him and Purslow liars etc before he even sat down! Roy went grey!
Paul Edwards @pauledwards1973
@shornKOOMINS Rafa puffed his shoulders up and gave him both barrels really about lies he and purslow told

David Fairclough and Peter Hooton together?Originally posted by Shaggy View PostDavid Fairclough was there with Hooton so no doubt we'll get their version of events. Fairclough, IIRC, doesn't even like Rafa so there'd be no reason for him to over-egg anything.

I swear they have the same voices!

A very good post on ynwa forums by poster -00_deathscar which I want to share with everyone
I still havent gotten over the fact that squad didnt win anything. Brilliant team. The second half of that season they could have a bought an intergalactic team of superstars to Anfield and Rafa and the team would have found a way to stop them.I'm actually at work, but was chatting to a friend about our 08/09 side. Which intrigued me. We were talking about use of money and how well some of it was spent.
As a reminder, here are the main players of our squad in 2008-2009, with the approximate sum we paid for them:
Reina 6 Cavalieri 3 Dossena 8 Arbeloa 2.5 Aurelio 0 Carragher 0 Hyypia 2.6 Agger 6.5 Skrtel 6.8 Mascherano 18 Lucas 6 Alonso 10.5 Gerrard 0 Kuyt 9 Riera 7 Benayoun 5 Torres 20 Keane 20 Babel 11
Total cost: GBP 142m
Now, obviously, not all players were signed in the 2008/2009 season, so inflation must be taken into account. However, what must be remembered is that bar Gerrard & Carragher (free) and Hyypia (1999), all the other players were signed during Rafa's tenure, with Alonso having been there the longest (4 season at the start of 08/09). Following that, Reina, Agger and Kuyt. All the other players had just been signed in the last season, at the start of the season, or in the interm transfer window (at the start of 08/09).
If you account for average inflation over a period of time in a developed economy like the UK/Europe being 10% year on year, the cost of the squad adjusts to 163m. Also, some of the fees above may have been inflated naturally (e.g. no one really knows how much Keane/Mascherano cost, so I went with the high end), and then further inflated to account for inflation.
We had built a team capable of dominating Europe for 163m. This astounds me. The wheels fell off, yes, but I just don't see where the "Rafa wasted money" myth perpetuated by the media comes from. Of the above squad, only Keane and Babel were 'bad buys' - and we (nearly) got back what we paid for Keane and it's arguable that Babel paid for his fee with his cameo vs. Arsenal in the European Cup alone. The "Rafa wasted money and delivered nothing" brigade just astounds me. Three of the players above were there before he came - the rest of the side was his. It shone, albeit very briefly.
Chelsea haven't dominated Europe, but have done extremely well domestically - and they've spent that approximate sum on their defenders! Man City haven't achieved anything yet, and have spent that sum probably on left backs alone.
Of course, we all know what happened after. I was merely intrigued, and extremely bored at work - so decided to do some calculations. That's all.
As it is, we sold Mascherano, Torres and Alonso shortly after for a combined 100m (nearly).

Chelsea managed to stop it under Hiddink But yeah, the second half of that season was immense.Originally posted by peekay View PostA very good post on ynwa forums by poster -00_deathscar which I want to share with everyone

I don't buy into the 'wasted money' myth either. I do have some criticism for the Academy buys that were made during his earlier years and his inability to drop players when they were in poor form. I wish he'd make up with Pako Ayesteran.
Remember that the media will focus moreso on the failures.

It's bollocks though isn't it (the ynwa post). We didn't dominate Europe, that's hyperbole. We were very good and consistently beat top teams bit we won a final and got to another. It also ignores the players you have to get through to and drop or sell because that don't make it into the list. And Carra and Gerrard were about £70m worth and we were very lucky that two home players came through like they did, can't see that happening any time soon.
It makes far more sense just to stick to the obvious fact that rafa is an extremely clever guy and an incredible tacticion when it comes to European football and got far more out of his team in the CL than the sum of its parts. Playing with figures isn't necessary.Last edited by Kenneth; 09-03-12, 06:18 PM.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years
