Guus Hiddink hints at return to replace Rafa Benitez at Chelsea
GUUS HIDDINK could return to Chelsea at the end of the season.

The Dutchman, who is manager of Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, won the FA Cup in his three months at Stamford Bridge as caretaker boss in 2009.

The 66-year-old had hinted at retirement – but he now says he is ready for a new challenge and that could signal a return to west London to replace Rafa Benitez, whose contract runs out at the end of the season.

Hiddink said: “I said to Dutch television that I might stop at the end of the season but we have other options to go on with (Anzhi). But I cannot predict where I am next season. I’m 66 now and will be 67 in the autumn. As long as I feel energetic and I’m not becoming an old, bitter, sour man with a red nose, then I can go on.”

He added: “I enjoyed my time at Chelsea very much. In 27 or 30 games, we lost only to Tottenham.

“I’m the only man who wasn’t sacked.”

Hiddink’s arrival will not affect Frank Lampard, 34, whose contract is unlikely to be renewed at end of the season. Hiddink said: “That’s up to the club, but most clubs have someone who protects the culture of the club and eat a lot of pies, at Chelsea, Frank is one of those guys.”

It would be very short-sighted of Chelsea to go back to Hiddink (not that I think there is any truth in this) and at a time when they are in a position to get rid of their old-guard and build on the youth they've spent heavily on.

We should at least try and get Hiddink in as DoF. We could build a dynasty with him and Rodgers in charge.

Meh. I'm happy with things as they are.

Hiddink is good at the implementation of westernised tactics, tied in with excellent man-management - all very short-term for my liking.

Few good results from now till the end of the season and if Maureen does join the Chavs again i think i could see PSG give Rafa a go.

Maybe even Citeh might give Rafa a go ? It really isn't that far fetched imo, especially as i say if these Chav players atleast give it a go from now till the season ends and results are good.

Rafa has shown he won't take any ****e from prima donna players, i could see Citeh going for that.

Who knows eh? Rafa and Fergie in the same Citeh! with Maureen back in the Prem too.

Rafael Benitez's Chelsea reign always doomed - Christian Purslow

Rafael Benitez was always doomed to fail at Chelsea according to his former boss Christian Purslow.

The former Liverpool manager was appointed on an interim basis in November but, following continued negativity from fans towards him, confirmed he will depart in May.

Ex-Liverpool managing director Purslow is not surprised to see Benitez struggling to adapt at Chelsea.

"It doesn't suit Rafa's book," he told BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek.

                        Benitez at Chelsea
                        Played: 28

                        Won: 15

                        Drawn : 7

                        Lost: 6

"There was a very dysfunctional ownership structure at Liverpool for that period which gave him disproportionate power, perhaps the most powerful contract in professional football for a manager, a contract that gave him much greater power than the normal manager.

"So I've got to say that when I saw him taking this job, going to a club where the reverse is true, on a temporary basis, no role in transfers, no total control, there wasn't a fit."

Purslow joined Liverpool in three months after Benitez signed a new five-year contract after winning a power struggle with former chief executive Rick Parry.
He worked with Benitez for a year before the Spaniard left the club by mutual consent in 2010.

The manager subsequently blamed Purslow for his departure from Anfield before embarking on an unsuccessful six-month spell with Inter Milan.

Benitez has always been unpopular with Chelsea's fans and after the 2-0 FA Cup fifth-round win at Middlesbrough, the 52-year-old hit out at a section of the Blues fans and claimed that his "interim" title was a "massive mistake".

Purslow believes those comments were a calculated ploy by Benitez.

He added: "I don't think it was a rant, I think it was planned, because Rafa plans everything. All managers are tricky when they're working with their executive team. They are used to being in charge, they want to be in charge.

"Up until Tuesday I would say I've been quite surprised and impressed with the way he has kept a relatively low profile.

"He does have form in the media in terms of outbursts, particularly against employers - Valencia, Liverpool, Milan it all happened. But I'd say he's been doing a pretty good job, slightly to my surprise.

"I think he probably cares about these issues too much and focuses on them too much."

Purslow also believes Benitez is not suited to working at a club where senior players hold a strong influence.

Although John Terry has denied the claims, former manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has said that the Chelsea captain and the likes of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole have too much power.

Purslow said: "He feels very, very strongly that all players should be treated equally. In fact, I'd say that's almost a defining characteristic of his management strategy.

"The reality is that's never true in any dressing room. You have senior pros, up and coming pros, people on their way out.

"So perhaps some people would say one needs to be a little more careful with those very senior pros. We all know that's true at Chelsea, it's been an issue with [Andre] Villas-Boas, Scolari.

"This was a tough brief for Rafa. In practise it doesn't feel like a good fit."

Stephane Henchoz currently on TalkSport talking about Rafa. Says he's not a good man manager, quite arrogant, doesn't speak with players in a nice manner etc.

The presenter reckons Henchoz played under Rafa for five years ffs.

                              Purslow has a point though.
                              Oh I don't know.

What the **** would Henchoz know? Clearly he would be bitter cos Rafa bombed him out. Wonder why Talksport didn't ask someone like Didi.

Don't think Purslow said much wrong there tbh even though he's a prick and his new profile in the media is a total joke.
