    Lampard: Benitez stint a success

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes Rafa Benitez did all that could be expected of him during his difficult period in charge of the club.

The former Liverpool boss received a frosty reception from the fans when he was appointed interim manager partway through the season when Roberto di Matteo left.

But the Spaniard confounded his critics by taking the Stamford Bridge club to Europa League glory and guiding them to third place in the Barclays Premier League.

Lampard, whose form under Benitez was rewarded with a one-year contract extension, said: "He's a professional bloke. He prepared exceptionally well for games. And it was a difficult situation for him as well. As interim manager it was always going to be quite difficult because we all knew it was only to the end of the season.

"So there was no planning, no long-term relationships were going to be built. So, in that respect, he did a good job because we got the end result - success."

Despite that, though, Lampard did not grow close to Benitez on a personal level.

"There are certain managers you build relationships with and feel closer to," Lampard said. "He's not that kind of bloke.

"Other managers draw a bit of a line and keep it that way. Rafa's more like that.

"He was not really the sort of manager you could sit and talk with."

I wonder how many players actually make the effort to talk to Rafa. I don't think he is as cold as he is made out.

Well, he seems like he's nice when he goes out of his way from people in the street. The way he carries himself in interviews - its all very public, but a perception is cultivated from that.

Anecdotal evidence from members of the public would suggest he's a nice man.

            He has a friendly face.

Well it just seems a bit odd to conclude that a number of people who have worked with him for many hours a day for months on end know less than you, who doesn't know him at all.

Also, a lot of people are very nice people but they have the view that work is work and adopt a totally different professional persona in that context.

OK. But read Daniel's post - makes a bit of sense doesn't it?

That's not a guide to how he chooses to be in work. Who knows?

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

But some players say he's really nice, some don't.

                        Maybe he doesn't like everyone

                          brilliant.

Though turning up to work pissed talking about hookers, should gain you promotion and universal respect it does seem it is more commonly frowned upon.
