      Rodgers ideal system is 433, which we will play this season. He changed to the diamond to fit in the SAS. Prior to LFC he'd never had a speedy and skilful front man at the tip.

      We all pine for the diamond for obvious reasons, I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching a Liverpool side any more than I did that season. But we can forget about seeing that again under Brendan.

      We will only see the diamond again if plan A (the 433) goes wrong. If Plan A goes wrong we could see anything. Rodgers is an inventive coach and he tends to come up with something. But I hope for once he has signed players that actually suit his preferred system - which is 433.

        He is that indeed which is his only redeeming feature. But a significant one.

        I'm not a fan of 433 unless you have big money to be honest. Its too defensive and you always need a spark from somewhere to win you games (as opposed to diamond where its a bit more gung ho). Chelsea have Hazard to get them out of the sh*t more often than he should and City have Aguero, Silva and Toure.

        If Firmino could be that spark player then great because Coutinho is not (great player but not a dig you out of the hole player).

          I agree with Danny I think 4-3-3 and maybe 4-5-1 (vs better sides away) will be the way we play.

          I've been tying to be positive about this season but yeah I do get the pessimism and cautious approach

            It depends very much on the players you have, you could have a gung ho 4-3-3 or a defensive one depending on how you set it up. I think our midfield 3 will be fairly attacking, if we play Coutinho as one of the midfield 3 you could imagine it almost as a 4-2-3-1 which worked well for us before. I see it more of a problem is we try to play someone like Coutinho in one of the wide forward positions which I don't think suits him. For me those two wide forward positions are key you need them to provide width (which isn't Coutinho's game) but also get in the box at the back post. The problem comes if your wide forwards get pushed back into midfield and it becomes 4-5-1 leaving the striker isolated. The other strategy is to try and get the fullbacks to provide the width allowing 3 forwards to play narrower, but that really needs an out and out DM to fill in the gaps, given the squad we have I doubt that will be the main way we play.

                OK, fair points. I guess it's just a wait and see approach until we kick off. I'm very interested in seeing Rodger's line up. I would assume a 4-2-3-1 would be more suitable than a 4-3-3 with Benteke on board, with Coutinho, Firmino and Ibe the three behind him.

                        IF he does go back to 4-3-3 / 4-3-2-1 I think he's done

                        This will be the 4th season he's tried this if it doesn't work its going to be another switch in tactic. It's the old Einstein definition of madness imo

                          It's nothing like the Einstein definition of madness if he tries it with different players. Particularly this year, as Benteke is a completely different type of player than he's had before at the focal point of the formation.

                          If that's the way he wants to play then it is clear to everyone, including Brendan, that this is his last chance to make it work.
