It's nothing like the Einstein definition of madness if he tries it with different players. Particularly this year, as Benteke is a completely different type of player than he's had before at the focal point of the formation.

If that's the way he wants to play then it is clear to everyone, including Brendan, that this is his last chance to make it work.

I think it's been said more than once since last season that this is his final chance to get it right. I'd agree with that. I think this summer he could make a case for getting another term after the massive success previously and the disaster in the market of signing Mario. He had excuses.

I also see the case for wanting him gone, as I eventually agreed with it. I was of the opinion that he should have made more of what he had last season, particularly in the Champions League. That and the final day to Stoke were a bit too much to allow all the excuses and brush it under the carpet.

But..... Changes have been made and we've done business this summer how we should have done last year. There can be no more excuses. To be frank, if he still can't make the system he wants work after signing a raft of players then he's no hope.

Pressure is really on to finish 4th, and I think it will be a tougher ask than last season.

Anelka could have been great at the stage in his career we had him, taking Diouf instead was one of Houlliers worst decisions.

I dunno, I think Houllier was justified to have his doubts about him given the myriad clubs he went on to play for after Liverpool - he was never settled and moved around a hell of a lot.

So - yeah, he might have been right to have his doubts, but his decision to sign Diouf was probably the worst one he made as Liverpool manager.
