It was very important for us. In our situation, four weeks ago we didn’t know we’d have a problem with centre-halves because they were all in the race. At the start of the season, Joe Gomez was also in the squad, so a fifth centre-half - and then the situation changed completely.

“Now, we’ve had to make a decision whether we wanted to get another player for the position. The situation is Martin Skrtel is not available for around about the next four-and-a-half weeks, five weeks. Then we have the problem with Dejan – it’s only a little muscle injury. I think he’ll be available in one to one-and-a-half weeks. Then you have Mama with a little knee issue – he can play, but it’s not perfect and you cannot bring him three or four times in a row throughout the season. And it’s the same for Kolo and so would mean we are always in this situation, do we have enough or not? So we thought, ‘Yes, good idea’.

“We looked for Premier League experience because in this short time, you need that experience. We looked for a good header [of the ball] because that’s what we need – we want to play good pressing, we want to press the opponent and so they have to play long balls. If they play long balls, you need people in the last line who can help you with headers.

“And we’ve found it with Steven Caulker. He was not in the best situation in Southampton, didn’t play too much, but this is January and we want to have the best solution for us and we are absolutely convinced that Steven is the best solution for us.

“I am looking forward to working with him. He will be here today and then we can start working, so everything is good!”

With Liverpool set to play at least five more fixtures before the conclusion of January alone, Klopp acknowledged the schedule meant it was essential Liverpool drafted in some defensive reinforcement.

He added: “I don’t want to talk too much about the schedule because I think I’ve spoken too much about it in the last few days, but my problem is most of the time I say the truth!

“The schedule is like it is. We have these two games [this week] and then hopefully we have a lot, a lot more games.

“We know all about our games in the league, but we don’t know how many games we will have in the different cups. This is the situation and we have to be prepared for this.

“January is the only month where we can do something. We did it in this position [defence] and now let’s go on.”

Jürgen Klopp has told Liverpool’s players they will be judged on a season-by-season basis but admitted he is also under pressure to develop a winning style this term.

Liverpool host Arsenal on Wednesday 12 points behind the Premier League leaders and with new loan signing Steven Caulker in line to debut in central defence should Mamadou Sakho fail to recover from a knee injury.

Klopp has said repeatedly that Liverpool do not require an overhaul of their playing staff in the January transfer window, moving for Caulker only in response to his recent injury crisis. But he admits players have until the end of the season to prove they should feature in his long-term plans.

Liverpool FC boss Klopp lands beer deal

Jurgen Klopp has landed a lucrative deal to promote German beer Warsteiner.

The Liverpool boss has been signed up as a brand ambassador for Germany’s largest privately owned brewery.

“I am particularly pleased about this partnership because I associate with a tasty Warsteiner a piece of home,” Klopp said.

“My grandparents had a small brewery and I appreciate the pleasure of a good beer.”

Klopp signed a four-year contract this week alongside Warsteiner brewery owner Catharina Cramer, marketing and sales manager Martin Hötzel and marketing director Jordi Queralt.

“Jurgen Klopp is a perfect brand ambassador for our non-alcoholic premium beers,” Cramer said.

“He is straightforward, authentic and close to the people. In particular, his passion is in line with our brand philosophy.

“He is a popular figure and we are thrilled that we will work together with Jurgen Klopp.”

A major advertising campaign featuring Klopp will be launched in April.

Not sure where to put this so I'll try here since JK has been criticised for this in some quarters.

Seems we're second in the injuries table:

Jürgen Klopp has said he was honoured Sir Alex Ferguson considered him as a potential successor at Manchester United but that the timing of the approach, coupled with loyalty to Borussia Dortmund, prevented a move to Old Trafford in 2013.

The Liverpool manager faces United for the first time in a competitive fixture on Sunday having been approached to replace Ferguson when the Scot retired three years ago. Ferguson claimed in his latest book that Klopp, Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho and Louis van Gaal were considered for the Old Trafford job but their unavailability in 2013 paved the way for David Moyes’s brief tenure.

Klopp admits he was flattered by Ferguson’s interest, and by his concern that Brendan Rodgers’ successor at Anfield has the talent to revive Liverpool’s fortunes. The 48-year-old returned the compliment on Friday by describing Ferguson as “the Sith Lord of football” and arguably the greatest manager of all time. However, Klopp insisted his commitment to Dortmund – who reached the Champions League final at Wembley in the season Ferguson stepped down – meant he never entertained the idea of swapping Westfalenstadion for Old Trafford.

“We spoke,” the Liverpool manager said. “We spoke not a lot but, for me, it was a lot. It was a big honour, the whole talk, to be honest. There was a time [when United were interested] but I could not leave Dortmund. That is it. You are in April and you are in the middle of the planning for next season. You have this player and this player and this player who is coming in but then you are not there any more? That doesn’t work. Not in my life anyway.

“I did not hear about a real offer but, if there was, I could not have done it. I first had to finish the job with Dortmund and then think about other things. Maybe that is not the smart way but that is my way. Of course I was loyal to Dortmund. It was the same at Mainz.”

The position of United’s current manager, Van Gaal, has been in doubt this season amid criticism of the team’s style of play and their slide from the Premier League summit to sixth going into Sunday’s game at Anfield. But the Liverpool manager claims sacking the Dutch coach, a former rival at Bayern Munich during his time in the Bundesliga, is not the answer to United’s search for success in the post-Ferguson era.

Klopp said: “The pressure [Van Gaal is under] has an affect on your whole life but, in my case, not on how I handle my team or anything like this. It is always the case if things don’t run the way you want – you have to think about whether to change things or not to change. Both decisions are really important. Life is not that nice. I know the whole world is watching football managers and thinking: ‘They are really well paid’, so no one cares about a manager’s feelings.

“I didn’t watch too much of these things at United but I heard about it. I know Louis is not too happy with the media at the moment but I think in life it is important sometimes to switch and think about how it would be on the other side. OK, fine, you would have all this money but also all this pressure so it is not nice. If you want to change things in football it is not OK that you think: ‘Bad, bad, bad – go.’

“That is not a change. If that was the solution I think Man United would have done it. But it is not a solution so they have to carry on. It is not our problem, but it is a manager’s problem. It’s not the case that the sun is shining every day as a football manager.

“It’s like with you [the media] with me when I came here. First it’s ‘Yeh!’ [gives a thumbs-up] then it’s ‘Erm’ [thumbs to the side] then it might be ‘Ooh’ [thumbs down], so then I am alone on the side and we might have the same situation here.

“I will not have changed as a human being but you are not interested in this. That’s no problem. I am only interested in what my friends and family think about me.”
