There's a few players at odds with Cameroon
West Brom have one as Pulis was talking about it the other day
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
At the moment its judged Liverpool vs FIFA / AFCON / Cameroon and thus little sympathy is shed.
However, if was Matip vs FIFA /AFCON / Cameroon with his written note waving in the wind and stating I'm being forced (ala slavery) then a different spin comes to the fore.
The slavery tagline would be an interesting position for Matip to take
I have said it before but this FIFA situation is probably a breach of his human rights
The problem is that in order to take FIFA/CAMEROON FA to court he has to accept a ban from all football during the proceedings
This is why very few footballers have taken the FAs / UEFA & FIFA to court and those that have invariably have been journeymen (Bosman & 'Webster)

This is probably why it has never been challenged, as unjust as this appears Matip would miss a month of football, if he were to legally challenge it that could take a couple of years which is a significant amount of a footballer's career. I imagine that most players would prefer to take the month long ban...
The other problem is that unless it is legally challenged it will be FIFA who are the judge and jury as well, so there is little to no chance of us winning this.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
What is required for CAS to hear an expedited case? Its not reasonably to expect a professional sportsperson to sacrafice so much of their career. Its not like an actor where you can carry on till you drop. You have a finite time sensitive career and missing even 6 months of it is relatively significant %
Cameroon are just being vindictive here, it is IMO an abuse of the power given to them by a stupid FIFA rule. The circumstances with Matip and the guy at West Brom should be cleared cut, one has retired from international football and the other turned up and wasn't selected. In neither case should there be any case to answer. But FIFA are a law unto themselves and have their own agenda as well as being completely incompitent. The rules are a joke as well there is no way that the default position in such cases is that the player is unavailable until the international team return some paper work allowing the player to play for the club that he is contracted to

It might be worth suspending Matip to fight this because it's just going to come up again in two years time. I'm sure other clubs will join in (class action?).
alternative view - if Matip has, as reported, said his beef is with the current management team and he'll come out of retirement if this management team is replaced, then I don't believe that constitutes a "retirement". Cameroon may have a point (based on the current rules)
Latest from Klopp:
Klopp: "I would consider lining Joel up tomorrow, but I do not know if I can. FIFA said they will decide on Friday whether to open a case."Joel is not happy about it, I told him before the United game I was sorry I couldn't pick him!
We now have to wait on a fit player who hasn't played for Cameroon in 16 months. It is difficult to get in touch with these people
I accept rules in life but they should be based on sense. In this case we cannot do more and that's really hard."
If the result is as we expect then Joel has missed 8 games, without doing anything wrong. It is really hard. We cannot do more.

His initial fall out was with the previous regime
He has just refused to come out of retirement, I cant imagine his relationship with his international team improving based on the current situation
