At Schalke he was the technique of the GK and Two CB grouping.
Fahrmann and Howedes provided the vocal leadership and more physical aspects.
Fahrmann is very much a keper who organises and coaches his CBs through games, and he is also the sort of keeper that comes to punch the ball a fair bit and when he does that, he goes all in and will take out a player or two along the way if he has to.
Howedes, who for the most part partnered Matip as Schalkes' usual pairing, is very good in the air and a physical defend at all costs type who is also vocal and a good organiser.
Matip was the more refined foil to Howedes style of play and it worked pretty well.
Matip also had players like Geis and Goretzka playing ahead of him, so again a pretty decent calibre of willing midfielders to link up with.
Compare that to what he has with us. Behind him plays a pretty timid style of goalkeeper (regardless of who plays) to whom aggression and decisiveness are almnost non existent, and up until we signed VVD we hardly had a vocal physical allrounder like Howedes to put with Matip.
And in front of him are midfielders who are more likely to get close to the backline looking for a pass that they will only play right back to the CB, than they are to receive a pass and turn to go up the pitch.
One thing Matip never was at Schalke was a leader/organiser at the back. But when good and proactive (not to mention aggressive) players were put around him, he would not only play up to their level, he would use their impact on the game to allow him to come out with the ball and to use his range of passing to great effect.
Matip is a good player and a good centre back, but he is the type that needs to be partnered with a physically dominant CB (which we have now done) and he thrives with midfielders in front of him that will play in tandem and on the front foot with him, rather than occupy the same space that Matip is trying to run or pass through.I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.
