That near post recovery tackle was excellent and he showed some strength on several occasions. Perhaps this is the form that prompted us to buy him?

He's vastly superior to most of the CB's we've had in recent years (although that isn't saying much). If he can stay fit I think he'll improve even more - I watched him loads at Schalke and he was excellent, but it's a big IF.

I like his marauding runs forward. It creates space by committing a defender. He has cult status potential if he bangs one in against the Blue****e.

It's about time this guy got some credit imo. He's a very good player, and did brilliantly tonight. When Gomez comes back, for a 3rd choice CB Matip is about as good as it gets. I'd take him over Lovren all day long.

I thought his form before Christmas was probably his best for us, getting back into it since his injury. Unfashionable but we'd be ****ed without him

Thought he was brilliant in the second half, after a decent first half and although he likes taking shots on our goal... there wasn't much he could do with that own goal. He just needs games into him and a good spell without injury. He was aggressive last night, was great to see.

I do like the way he's progressive and pushes out, it's essential sometimes although his control is for **** & scares the life out of me. Go by one player and pass it Joel yeah great, not by 5!

Very good performance and tonight showed the aggression that makes a man of his size a difficult prospect to play against.

Agree, he might even have some suitors come the summer, hope he stays though, I like him and he ticks most boxes. He might even get better over the next two or three seasons.

I've always had him ahead of Lovren but with his long list of injuries i've become fed up with him. Amazed he's lasted this long tbh and thankfully he has, now Lovren is nearing a comeback i wouldn't be surprised if he crocks again but until then...
