We are up against an ever improving City. We need to keep Gomez, looks at who City have on the bench. Phillips and Williams are nowhere near good enough.

I suggested Williams as a retort to the ridiculous assumption Phillips should be 4th choice.

Difficult to buy a CB that has quality that is happy to be a squaddie.

Yeah I was getting that. Williams did unbelievable well for us last year, but he’s not the answer. Phillips should sign for Bournemouth, apparently he has been great for them.

This is the bit that doesn’t fit so well with my, admittedly hazy, memory.

Must have forgotten him not looking even slightly out of place at the regular beside VVD when we won the title.

He only managed a handleful of gams the following season due to his injury and this season Matip has stayed fit (and been excellent) along with
Konate coming in and being excellent so players are ahead of him thanks to their form.


Does not take away from the fact Gomez played very very well in that title winning season and his positioning that season was not an issue in the slightest.


Even this season the few times he has played at CB or RB there have been no signs of his supposedly dodgy positioning.

And as for the idea of Philips coming in to replace him (Not suggested by Kenneth of course). Philips is a CB whose positioning is actually poor and he does not have any sort of recovery pace to bail him out. Philips is playing at his level at present and maybe he might be bought by Bournemouth in the summer but he is levels below a fit Gomez or any of our other CBs and keeping him for the sake of cover and selling Gomez would be pointless.

Gomes is a far superior CB than Philips and comes with the added bonus of being good cover at RB if needs be. Far far more experienced a player than Philips as well.

I think it's about managing his minutes and he's been a regular in the PL whereas Konate has been a regular in the CL all season.
