    True but different eras.

I could see Carragher struggling badly in a Klopp team and not being a regular at all in a Klopp team. Carragher's best years came under two managers that favoured defensive tactics in Ged and Rafa.

Not many slower or one paced CBs thrived in past Klopp teams without being very very good footballers and/or physical beasts to counter the lack of pace.

Hummels would be an example of a not lightning quick CB (though not slow during his first spell with Dortmund) in a Klopp team but he could pass and play make as well as most top class midfielders.

Subotic too to a degree with regards to not being a super fast CB under Klopp, but not slow either. He was a pretty good footballer though in his prime along with being dominant in the air and a bit of a physical beast.

Did that occur during the clash with Zlatan?

Nat played for the remainder of the game after that.

What does amuse me about Phillips, and it is in no way a knock, is that I look at him play and his limitations are pretty obvious but at the same time I look at Maguire play for the Mancs and cannot see how one is an 80 million pound centre back and the other seems to have few clubs after him.

Not saying Phillips is an 80 million pound player ( Maguire is not either in terms of ability though is one in terms of what was spent on him) but I do see them as similar in style and similar in both their qualities and limitations not to mention pace. Phillips for me is Maguire with less playing experience and really should be a 20m to 25m player to be snapped up by a PL team that wants to play with a deeper backline.
This is absolutely spot on imo and I literally had this conversation with a United fan this week.

There is a very compelling argument for that, you know!... I would be inclined to agree with that as having got Konate in.

Do not think there is any arguement that could warrant selling Gomez and bumping a lesser player up to take his slot.

Gomez is a far better footballer than Phillips and suits how we or most of the other top teams in the league play better than Phillips ever could plus he is vastly more experienced than Phillips. Philips is unusually inexperienced for a 24 year old footballer. Phillips as a stop gap is fine, but would not want to have to rely on him for a full season.

If Gomez was to be deemed surplus to needs based on his injury record then the only arguement that could be made would be to replace Gomez with a more durable player with similar or better qualities than Gomez.

Phillips is an honest whole hearted player who is, imo, good enough for a number of Pl teams that do not play with as high a back line as we do, but he is nowhere near the quality of our four main centre backs.

Put it this way, if Matip or Gomez were to leave the club in January and Phillips was a 24 year old CB playing for Burnley with the same number of career games to his name I doubt he would be on our radar.

The only worry is Gomez is so injury prone, as is Matip. Konate has looked less than convincing on times and is still finding his feet. The last thing we want to do is be in the same situation or similar as last year. You know what you get with Nat and he will make a decent CB for a team with a certain style. The 10m quoted is way too low imo.
