I agree with that assessment that Gomez is a far better player but Nat seems to be a more reliable back-up & is less likely to kick up a fuss if not playing regularly. Gomez knows what is happening in front of him with VVD & Matip being considered as first choice with Konate coming in to his place as the next port of call so is he gonna accept that or show the management that he's still the same imperious Joe that was first choice along with VVD.
FWIW, I don't think Joe will get back to that level after 2-3 bad injuries with a possible another one somewhere down the road trying too much to get back into the first eleven again. You & I know that once ya had a couple of bad injuries, takes a long time to get that mojo back...ask Ox, he's only starting to look good now so in the meantime, if ya have someone who's ready & reliable to step in, ya gotta utilise them.
I'll be delighted if they both stay on at the club as both great players in their own right & contribute to the team in their own way.
Nope, don't need anger management, you just need to stop pissing me off!

The 10m quoted is way too low imo.

10m would be too little for Phillips imo. Said elsewhere in the thread that he should be a 20m to 25m purchase for someone and that is pretty much based on what other CBs have gone for.

Think with regards to Gomez that we would need someone a hell of a lot better than Phillips to replace him. Think we missed a trick early last January when Militao was being touted for loan or sale by Real.

Guy plays a lot like Gomez albeit a tad rougher/more physical at times, is a fast CB, is a pretty good right back when he plays there, and seems to have a never say die mentality on the pitch at times. Is younger than both Gomez or Phillips as well.

Fecker has gone from being surplus last January to now being a regular starter for Real and also for Brazil.

        £10m is farcical

Is £10m an agreement we made with him when he signed a new contract maybe? Otherwise, it does seem quite low considering what he would bring to any PL side outside the top 8 teams.

Or is £10m just media specualtion and the real fee will actually be much higher?

Cant risk sending gomez on loan as he will pick up an injury and were back to where we started.
            Keep Nat, sell gomez.

Nat will be more likely to be happy being 3rd or 4th choic CB and he will always be available when needed.

Dont forget how reliable Nat was when vvd, matip, fabnho, henderson, and everyone else was broken, and we did ok with Nat and phillips in defence.

Big Nat had a few MoM performances last season, just need to get Thiago mentoring him on how to eradicate the hoofs from his forward passing

I can't see us selling Origi in Jan given the ACN meaning we'll be without Mane and Salah

Agreed. But I also think Newcastle would be well advised to put in a £15m offer for Nat. He is exactly the sort of player they need to survive and progress.

25m and they can have him.

Throw in an extra 35m and they can have Origi

Then off we go to Leipzig with that money and get Nkunku

They are desperate, loaded and they have Eddie Hose in charge who has overpaid for a number of our players in the past I think even at £25m we're setting our sights low

Fine they can have Origi, Phillips, Karius, Keita and Chamberlain for 200m

Then we go buy Nkunku, Barella and Lautaro Martinez with it.

The latter pair to screw Inter when they play us.

Gomez only ever looked excellent when with VVD. Half the time he was all over the place. Nat meanwhile almost always excellent whoever is near him. I may or may not be biased but I refuse to admit it. If he was playing for any other team we'd be saying we should sign him.

Gomez looked good straight away after VVD was injured against Everton last season. He was switched to the LCB role and assumed the role of the vocal leader at the back until he got injured himself.

Phillips has always given honest performances every time he has played for us but he lacks any sort of recovery pass, is not good at bring the ball out from the back and is constantly drawn into a sort of no mans land in that space on the right between the CBs and the midfield without having the pace to get back.

For me he would look excellent in a back line that sits deep and his defend at all costs style of play (which is never a bad quality for a defender to have) would look even better in such a team.
