Surely people bet on their own team to lose because they either think they are going to make money out of it or to mitigate the pain of defeat. I haven't met anyone who does it for the pleasure of their own team losing.Originally posted by RedReet View PostI would like to think that deep down the common denominator is that everybody wants us to win, but I also know that isn't always true. A simple example being supporters betting against their own team or having FF players play against their own team and them putting their own immediate and personal success over the team they allegedly support. As I said, people get different satisfaction from their team winning, if something else gives them greater satisfaction at that expense, of course they are going to want that.
Whether that means anyone genuinely prefers being proven right over their team winning, we can argue all day, but the often used argument 'we are all reds, all want the same thing' clearly doesn't hold up.
I hadn't given much thought to the jackpot comment, but now you mention it, Keita is a perfect example. Unbridled success while he was here (which he contributed to), but because of unfortunate injury, certain people could still say at every opportunity how **** he was and how they were right all along, but still enjoy success on the field. Best of both worlds.
Sorry, not sure what you mean by the last line?
As for Keita the main problem with him for me was people calling him a world class talent which I think was rubbish then and rubbish now. But you can believe either of those points, it doesn't mean that you have to be a super or **** fan to do it. You don't have to get pissed off because someone holds the alternative view, or question their support for the club.
Which leads me to my last sentence. Playing the ball means you are arguing the points. Playing the man means arguing the points is incidental - you start to attack the arguer as well.Experimental music, Metropolitan foodstuffs, Mexican wrestler art, London suburbia, wry whimsy, fansy pants flim flam lad

Reading back, yours was probably the wrong post for me to quote and make my point. I do this all the time, read comments others make (not just on here, IRL, other platforms) and have certain thoughts. Don't want to reply to certain post(er)s, so end up responding to more reasonable posters, who are not necessarily making the point I'm arguing, which admittedly is quite confusing for the reader.Originally posted by Venton View PostWhy does it have to be people desperate for him to fail? You can usually only judge players on their performances, that's where they live and die. If they play well they get the plaudits and are loved. If they don't they get criticised for it. There can't be a single fan who wants our number 9 to be ****. People just don't like criticism of our players and feel the need to attack those who do. It's forum cape crusader childish bull****.
This has the Keita thread written all over it,and that was embarrassing enough after the Karius one.
I stand by the points I made though, but regret linking to your post, as without the context in my head, it sounds very patronising (which wasn't intended).
I took the line, 'play well- get praise, play bad- get criticism', as being quite a simple way of looking at things and equated it to the 'we are all reds' defence, which you didn't necessarily make, then ran with that.
Maybe we should just wait until Nunez misses a chance tonight and let things return to normal.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

As I said, sort of went off track a bit, but I was just illustrating that people don't always want what is best for their team. Maybe a better example to use would be when fans want a manager sacked, so want the team to lose thinking it's for the greater good. Maybe some fans feel like that with players, want them to be **** so they are replaced for the greater good. (That's just me being diplomatic though, still think some fans are just miserable f*ckersOriginally posted by Venton View PostSurely people bet on their own team to lose because they either think they are going to make money out of it or to mitigate the pain of defeat. And thought that's what you meant about playing the ball, although think you got it back to front which is what confused me. It's actually a fair point and something I actively try to avoid doing by ignoring certain posters. In my defence though, it's often not the person I am replying to I have in mind with certain comments and sometimes I find discussions about psychology and human behaviours more interesting than the actual football.

Super fan
Only kidding
Nah could not take to him once the spitting was caught on camera. Wanted the team to win, but all he was was a scumbag.
Wanted him out and for the most part when he started a game I treated it like we put out ten players instead of eleven. Which was handy as when Diouf started a game it was like starting with a man down anyway.

When having these conversations I always think of my mate's brother. From day 1 he couldn't stand Aspas, hated him. I couldn't understand why because I thought he looked decent and it was early days. Why did he hate him? Because he didn't like the look of his face.
Didn't matter how well he played, still hated him and wanted rid.

Did you feel the same way about Suarez? He's bit 3 professional footballers live on camera and the worst one was in a LFC shirt. He's a scumbag but we all loved his footballing genius. If Diouf was as talented as Suarez I guarantee we all would have went along with it, made excuses and lauded his talents.Originally posted by Doc_Piptorious View PostSuper fan

Pretty sure I would not have gone along with anyone that was spitting into the faces of other people or spitting at them tbh. Is something I have a particular disdain for and would have a problem seeing beyond that disdain no matter how talented the person is.

Suarez was a nightmare for precisely those points. He was a genius, but when I have (for example) my Mum asking about him, you know his PR and profile because of the things he did and the publicity he was getting is an issue.
Modifying post.
