Remember the Gillett and Hicks saga. Remember the Purslow saga.

Of course every player in the squad will say to the media how excellent Rodgers/Ayre is. Who knows if it is the truth or not.

I would say that the Suarez transfer saga and now Reinas letter is very worrying. I would say that the many missed transfers is very worrying.

    Remember what happened last summer.

I don't think Rodgers had the last word in the Reina loan. I think that was a decision the manager had nothing to say about.

Remember the HM failed transfer when Rodgers was in Donetsk but wasn't allowed to speak to the club or the player. How the **** could Ayre **** that one up so completely that it left Rodgers travelling to Donetsk without any guarantee that he would talk to the club and the player.

Ayre shouldn't have anything to do with the transfer negotiating bit. He should do what he is good doing. Negotiating sponsorship contracts. He should leave the transfer negotiating bit to someone that is very good doing it.

There are a lot of aspects to this move.

Maybe FSG/Ayre/Rodgers thought that he was not worth 110K per week. They may have not looked to actively push him out but if the opportunity arises they would expedite the situation.

Maybe Rodgers wanted to put his stamp on the team. Maybe he believed that Mignolet is a better value for money than Pepe and while again he may not have actively undermined Pepe, he took advantage of this situation.

Maybe Pepe wanted to move to Barca and if not he wanted to stay here.

Maybe the reason why Pepe wanted to stay here was a combination of loyalty as well as the fact that few clubs with our stature and ability to pay wages are actively looking for first choice goalkeepers.

Pepe will present his side of the story and I am sure the club will present or have already presented theirs through the interview Rodgers gave.

You can simplify the situation and paint Pepe as white and the Rodgers/Ayre/FSG axis as black. There are shades of grey at both ends and the actual truth I am sure lies somewhere in the middle of all the reasons mentioned above.

Until Valdez pulled out of a move to Monaco, this was a situation convenient for all parties. However the Barca bid did not materialize and I think the club acted correctly. Maybe they could have handled the communication better but I don’t think there is any need to overly criticize the management for the way they handled this situation.

Pepe doesn't really have the right to be upset on this

He kept talking about going to Barcelona so we had no choice but to find another keeper incase barca came in and Pepe left.

He can't expect us to then keep him and Mignolet in the team just because it then suits him. He said he would sign a new contract if Barca didn't come in but at the same time admits that he would be off if they did. I love the guy but that's bollocks

Didn't Barrett or Pearce or one of the better connected journos say fairly recently that Pepe has been on the verge of leaving several times over the past few seasons.

If true, much as I like the bloke I don't have too much sympathy TBH.

I'm a bit gutted with that letter to be honest, the way I read it he's got things off his chest in the knowledge that he's got nothing to lose.

the letter was a dirty parting shot.
he would have walked to barca if they called, and seemed to be waving at them, maybe not for the first time. brendan was spot on signing a top quality replacement to ensure the team wasnt left 'flapping for a keeper' as the window slammed shut.

there is no loyalty, as reina would have demonstrated as soon as his agent told him that barca are on the phone.
he then questions our shipping him out on loan as a lack of loyalty. bollocks, pepe.

100k a week, and still upset

removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

keith costigan ‏@KeithCostigan 7h Rafa called Reina every day for 6 months before signing him for Liverpool and didn't call him about Napoli move?

Tony Barrett ‏@TonyBarretTimes 36m @KeithCostigan He's not saying he didn't know about it Keith. He's saying Liverpool didn't inform him about it.

Kop·ol·o·gy ‏@Kopology 34m @TonyBarretTimes @KeithCostigan Maybe LFC didn't "inform" him about it, because you can't inform someone about what they already know.

Tony Barrett ‏@TonyBarretTimes 33m @Kopology @KeithCostigan That's true but his gripe is about etiquette. If he feels that's how it should be done that's his right.
