    I know it's Goal.com but:

West Ham are preparing to call time on their Andy Carroll gamble and send the striker back to Liverpool in January, Goal.com understands.

The Hammers agreed a season-long loan deal for Carroll with the Merseyside club in August but have grown frustrated with the England international’s injury problems and believe the wage commitment could be better spent on other players.

West Ham currently pay all of Carroll’s £90,000-a-week salary but the striker has made only 10 appearances this season, scoring just one goal in their defeat at Tottenham in November.

Liverpool have a recall option in the winter transfer window but West Ham can also end the agreement for the 23-year-old.

Carroll is currently sidelined with a knee injury but hit the headlines earlier this month following an alleged altercation with a photographer during West Ham’s Christmas party in Dublin.

Brendan Rodgers, the Reds manager, sees no future for Carroll at Anfield despite the enormous £35 million spent by former manager Kenny Dalglish to bring him to the club from Newcastle in January 2011.

Newcastle are keen to bring Carroll back to Tyneside and will consider a move in January if their former star returns to Liverpool. Alan Pardew is facing questions over the futures of both Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba and made clear his desire to re-sign Carroll last summer.

Carroll has scored just 11 goals in 58 games for Liverpool and has been told he has no future on Merseyside despite vowing to fight for his Reds career, with his style of play ill-suited to Rodgers’ passing philosophy.

If true... and I take everything those hacks say with a lorry load of salt... that would be a disaster for us having that much money piled back onto the wage bill.

Hi Reece. There is a thread about Andy Carroll in the general football section. But as this article relates to us I will let it slide. Thanks

At this point, I'd flat-out swap him for Ba. Whatever happens we're going to lose an arseload of money so may as well try to get a decent player out of it.

Swap him for Ba. If he ends up coming back in jan i can see that having a serious effect on our transfer budget having to put him back on the payroll.

ANDY CARROLL wants to return to Newcastle after being told his Liverpool career is over.

The England striker is on a season-long loan at West Ham, but has been told by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers that he can leave in the summer.

Liverpool’s £35m recordsigning has been a flop since his switch from Newcastle in January 2011.

He was farmed out to Upton Park at the start of the season by Rodgers after he succeeded Kenny Dalglish as boss in June.

Rodgers feels Carroll cannot adapt his game to the way he wants Liverpool to play. And Starsport understands he has told Carroll he can leave at the end of the season.

This is a blow to Carroll, who has expressed his determination to prove his critics wrong.

Carroll, 23, has scored just 11 goals in 58 games for the Reds and has never got close to justifying his transfer fee.

He angered officials at the club earlier this month by going on West Ham’s Christmas trip to Dublin with a knee injury. He was spoken to by police on that trip about an alleged fracas with a photographer.

Although Carroll has settled in London, and can play the style of football demanded by Hammers boss Sam Allardyce, his first choice would be a return to St James’ Park.

Toon fans were stunned when their local hero left two years ago, and boss Alan Pardew considered trying to bring Carroll back on loan before he ended up at West Ham.

Now Carroll believes a cash-plus-player deal, possibly involving Toon top scorer Demba Ba, could provide a route back to his beloved North East.

The Senegal ace has been linked with a transfer and has a £7.5m release clause in his contract.

He is in hot water after going public on recent links with Arsenal, with Ba saying: “It is true, Arsenal are among the clubs that are tempting.

“Journalists are doing their job, they know Arsenal need strikers and they know I have a clause in my contract so they start speculating.”

Meanwhile, Stewart Downing is looking to move in the opposite direction and is open to the idea of joining West Ham.

The winger has been told he can leave Liverpool, although no formal approach from the Hammers has been made. daily star
