I'm gonna say it. I thought Downing was awful. 20-30 people around me at the ground thought so too. they were crying out for him to be subbed. I know you see/notice certain things at games you don't on the TV, but some of you were also at the game. Found him very frustrating, never seemed to beat his man, seemed to check his run and pass the ball backwards, as well as over hitting crosses. Just saying like.

Was very good in first half but faded in the second, and then was completely ineffective when switched over the the right side. Even though i'm not fans of either as much Kenny's fault for playing Downing there too IMO, same goes for Henderson at RM.Originally posted by GTi View PostI'm gonna say it. Do you feel that the group you refer to had a mindset that he was crap and then only saw what reinforced that perspective?Originally posted by GTi View PostI'm gonna say it. Was sat next to a group against Brighton that bemoaned Carroll throughout the game. They just couldn't see he had a good game. And many persisted with Lucas way too long.

I had thought about this, and it could possibly be true, and I/we were astounded when he was announced as MOM. He has this annoying habit of looking like he's about to go on an amazing run only to stop do a 360 turn, realise he's got know where to go and then pass it sideways/backwards. I really want to see him use his undoubted pace and produce quality crosses. I know he cannot be expected do this with every run, but 3-4 times a game isnt much to ask.Originally posted by JHP View PostDo you feel that the group you refer to had a mindset that he was crap and then only saw what reinforced that perspective?

Brilliant yesterday... As I've said at other times, it makes you wonder why it takes a cup final to bring out anything like his best. Playing for us should be enough motivation, he was good to watch, looked confident and dangerous. Hopefully he doesn't go back into his shell after thisVive la France

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I certainly think it's a confidence issue, he looked to be playing with confidence at the start of the season and those performances were alright, his poor performances you can clearly see he lacked confidence. Hopefully winning a cup final and a man of the match award in it will give him the boost he needs to put in some good performances and he can show why we bought him.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Very good game by Downing yesterday.
He and Skrtel were the best players on the pitch.
Asked for the ball, attacked their fullbacks, had some beautiful crosses in (shame neither Luis nor Andy were nowhere to be found in the box), took a few decent shots, defended pretty good etc.
Really should never play on the right (it amazes me that we didn't really try to play him on the left and Bellamy on the right) as he wasn't nearly as effective but on the left he was really good and I for once wanted to see more balls send his way as he seems to be in the mood.
If he can repeat this type of performance on regular basis he would change opinions of many.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

On the point of out strikers in the box.. Neither want to get in front of the defender, so many goals can be scored across the season that way, it creates more room for others too.Vive la France

A very good game, albeit against lower league opposition. Games like that demonstrate why the assists stats (and stats in general) are not the be all and end all as he put some excellent balls into the box that weren't capitalised upon.
One swallow doesn't make a summer though, and we need quality performances against superior opposition than was faced yesterday.
