It didn't work because we had two distinct styles of play and couldn't decide on which one best suited out. Now we have one distinct style of play and Carroll doesn't suit it. Sam has one style of play and Carroll suits that style of play down to the ground, add Downing to that and it would be a simple but effective combination.

Personally speaking I have no problem with Downing staying or leaving.
I don't mind if he leaves because he is on a huge wage and for the amount of playing time he is afforded he doesn't score or create enough and I don't mind if he leaves because he is one of the few in our squad that can quickly the ball up the pitch at pace and also does a good job of covering for the fullback.

If Downing is sold that would leave Brad Jones from Hodgson's reign and Enrique and Henderson (with Suarez likely to leave) from Kenny's reign, after 3 years and a fortune paid.

Downing has arguably played his best games forums playing on the right. He doesn't get to the line & whip the ball in with any kind of accuracy to be of any use to big Sams plans but if they want to give us £8m then let's sell. I don't mind if he stays though.

I would be ecstatic to claw back around £23m for Carroll and Downing. Huge loss I know but the two combined ain't worth £23m. Get it done.
