It's the truth. He doesn't have the mentality of a leading player, he's an also ran. I have no idea what game you were watching, but when I see Downing, I see a pacey winger who has one dribble, and can only get past someone off the ball. He also constantly hits the first man when he crosses, and ****s his pants when he has a chance to shoot.

I've defended him constantly in the forum, but he has no excuses. He's not 21. You can see he's not a bad player, he can be cerebral, but most of the time he's an afterthought.

the intelligence thing is something that could be aimed at a few of our players, its part of the reason we struggle to score goals. I agree that Downing seems to lack the balls to take the game by the scruff of the neck, he doesn't get ruffled or ruffle anyone. He needs to get angry.

Where did I say anything close to what you've described?

Downing is a winger, an attacking player. We need him to create, we need him to beat players, we don't need to carry another player offensively.

He's got to realize he's a senior player in a top club, take the responsibility and get out there and initiate danger.

Lucas, Gerrard, Suarez and Agger are our most important players in my opinion. Deciding the order of that is another matter.

I thought he played well today. Disciplined deep and created chances when he got up the other end. Not sure that we can accommodate him and Henderson in the team when we put Kuyt so far away from Henderson though. We need at least one more goal threat in the team I think when that happens.

I think Bellamy being rested from the match squad today changed our plans a little bit. He's not a natural in front of goal that is clear but he played pretty well today all things considered.

agree with this............downing if anything has gone backwards,he's like harry kewell .....flatters to decieve .....fails to deliver..........good at his last club **** for lfc....signed for a **** load of money
