He's a very good player but the Chelsea fans I know are still bitter that they didn't get Silva. They had a bid accepted at the time I think. They see Mata as the lite version of Silva.

Comparison of his assist stats with other players are a little unfair IMO due to our woeful finishing. Downing has created quite a few decent chances that our players have wasted, for example yesterday he delivered a great cross on to the head of an unmarked Suarez 6 yards out and he headed it straight at the keeper. He could easily have 5 assists and with a bit more luck a couple of goals.

A better comparison would be the number of chances people create.

where do you draw the line between creating a half chance and a sitter because downing has created some sitters that our strikers havent dispatched.

in other teams decent strikers will gobble up easy chances and still convert their share of half chances so its a tough one to quantify imo.

you need to assess the quality of the chance created. I was watching the new brad pitt movie moneyball yesterday and the level of mathematical modelling was astounding.

its graduate level mathematics not gcse type scored ten goals for each of the last five seasons so will score ten goals for us this season.

im sure the theory is that downing has a pretty high sabermetrics co-efficient. its not working at the minute because I suppose it didnt take into account the andy carroll logorithm.

downing would have far far far better stats than mata this year had our strikers taken all the chances he has created. even yesterday, suarez 5 yards out with no one marking him - pin point cross from downing and suarez heads it woefully into the keepers arms.

Doesnt do it enough though. And cant beat his man for love nor money. Entirely predictable, tries to go down the outside, cant gain a yard and then either gets his cross blocked or he puts in a **** one.

He has a responsibility to make things happen for us, but he's been nowhere near good enough.

Oh come on, it's pretty obvious you have a huge agenda against not just English but British players and think Germans are perfect. The only time you'll ever praise any of them is with some some sort of backhanded compliment or a bit of praise then a but at the end.

I'd generally agree with Germans/Spanish over British players but you dont seem to accept there might be exceptions to the rule or some good Brits out there.

Have you seen my comments on Glen Johnson? Have you read that I really rate him? How about Gerrard being one of my favourite players of all time? Carragher was my first choice for CB up till this season? Also, we'll likely never sign him, but I also rate Sturridge.

Not so much bothered about the price. I've been saying it's wrong to judge Carroll on the fee, so the same has to apply to Downing.

He just hasnt had a positive impact for me. If we'd signed Matt Jarvis instead, i dont think we'd be noticing any real difference from what Downing's offering. And unlike Andy Carroll, Downing is meant to be the finished article. That's why it's so disappointing.
