He was the archetypal "Moneyball" signing, his stats are why we signed him, yet he's turning into one of our biggest transfer disasters in years.

What's the relevance in having good stats at a previous club if you're just not capable of reproducing them at a higher level?

99% of people would've told you in May that spending £18.5million on Downing was crazy. Who was that 1% who thought it was OK?

It was thought that Kenny would improve him, as he did with other players in the past.

Agree about moneyball...I hate it. So much more to consider than just stats when spending big money, eg mentality. I think many of us would have had question marks over Downing's mentality to play for LFC.

I'm not sure his signing proves any such thing. If such an approach was adopted, which doesn't seem 100% clear, then it will surely take refining when changing from one sport to another.

I don't see much difference between Downing and some of the signings Comolli made for Spurs. My feeling is that we rushed this set of transfers trying to get a CL place back this season and it has backfired. Comollis signings have frequently taken a year or so to improve the team, my feeling is that his approach requires targeting younger players. I think we got Downing after too many bad habits have set in.

Yesterday was the first game I have watched where I thought Downing was as bad as people have said he has been. Contributed almost nothing in attack or defence.

Downing was brutal yesterday, gave Enrique no help at all. The two of them don't seem to be compatible down that side. He shouldn't have seen the second half. I don't know why some managers won't make a change until 60+ minutes have gone.

He is not good enough for a team looking to challenge for the top 4 and I don't think he believes that he is good enough either.

At the age of 27 this is his big chance and he is blowing it with a string of abject, gutless performances
